Go Up Go Down

I finally went out in my backyard to see how my detector would work.  We bought the house 9 years ago which is part of an old homestead that has been lived on for the last 100 years or more.  The house we bought is about 50 years old and there was a sandbox in the back yard made of old railroad ties that I thought I would check out.  We have a four year old but he has not played in the sand box as we had made it into a fire pit a few years back.  So off I go with my son to see what we would find.  About 6 inches from the sand box, we heard a beep so started digging.  As the hole got a little wider and with me thinking I have to get me a pinpointer, I suddenly found a red dinky car buried about 5 inches down in packed dirt/mud/clay.  It was not of my son's and I expect it belonged to the family that lived here before us.  There was also a white piece of lego.  Kalan thought it was very cool that I was digging up dinky cars.  Heard another beep about two feet from where I was digging but after digging a very wide and deep hole finally gave up (did I mention I hate bugs, worms and anything else living in the dirt).  Scanned the actual sand box which is now overgrown with weeds and had another beep in the middle of the pit but as I pulled up the weeds, I unearthed an ant's nest (did I mention I do not like bugs?)  Whatever happens to be there can stay with the ants.  Walked back towards the house and heard another beep - dug for a bit and unearthed the c shape piece of metal  (it is a connector for the wire fence to the pole when we had our fence built 9 years ago.  I called it a day with the decision to make or buy a pinpointer and try out a beach (less bugs).  I have to admit I am still grinning with finding the dinky though.  I think I am hooked.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I had gloves on but I still get squeamish just seeing them.  Give me a little credit - I did dig three holes (and refilled them).  I just think I will have more fun digging in sand.  It was nice to know the used metal detector I purchased worked.

Go Up Go Down

Well today I went to the closest beach to me which is really just a bit of sandy/rocky beach (part of a provincial park) - found a penny, dime and corona beer cap.  When walking on the grass, I kept hearing the beeps but I did not think the grounds crew would appreciate my ever widening holes (have to get or build a pinpointer).  I have not perfected finding something on the first plug so I left all those alone.  One of the items I dug was a very large rock (size of a pineapple) which was causing my machine to signal.  No idea what it was made up of.

Hi Sonya,
Glad you're hooked on this hobby. The finds will get better and better, and you probably won't even notice little critters once you learn your detector and know it's a good target under your coil.

To make things easier on yourself, practise pinpointing the targets. After a while you'll be able to dig a 3 or 4" plug and find your target right in the middle of it. Start with a coin on the surface and sweep your coil left to right and pay attention to the loudest sound, then rotate your body 90 degrees and do it again and try to visualize the center point in the X you created with your swing.

A handheld pinpointer comes in handy locating your find after you've cut a good plug after you pinpointed with your machine. If you're in the market to buy one, the Garrett ProPointer is great. I bought mine in March after a lot of years without one and kick myself for not having bought one sooner.

Good Luck!
Mike

Hey Sonya,
Rocks that go beep can be worth alot of money!  Shocked meteorites often set off metal detectors. if you didnt pick it up go back and get it. post some picks if it looks right then take it to the next step and have it tested.

VPR

Ps. Good luck  Smiley

PM if you rather

The rock was a smooth sided normal looking rock - seemed odd to me that it beeped but there was nothing at all odd about it other than it reacted.  I had buried back where I found it so can get it.  Where would I bring it for testing?
