Ive used my own homemade electrolysis for years. I should make a tutorial on what I do. Basically I use a transformer from any electrical device that has an output of 18 volts, you can use 12-24 Volts or whatever you have lying around that puts out DC current. Make sure its putting out DC current!! AC wont work, and you can get shocked. Read the output carefully. Cut the plug end off and hook the wires up to alligator clips. I like to use a piece of wire and add to the existing for this so I have basicly at least 12" of leads. Take any stainless steel spoon, fork, knife etc......and a glass of water and mix in about a tablespoon or more of table salt. I use warm water to dissolve it fast and mix it up so its within about an inch from the top of the glass. Now take the negative side.......... if you dont know which is negative clip one side to the stainless spoon and the other to a junk copper penny, the penny should starting foaming within seconds, if  it doesnt, reverse the leads. Tada! you now have a great way to cleanup any rusty or corroded metal. Take care not to leave it in too long, small coins like a penny with minimal corrosian will only take less than a minute, heaavy corrosion on a penny might take 5 minutes, but leaving anything in too long will destroy it with pits in the metal. Anything that might be of value (your knife) I would take out after a minute and clean under warm water and use "old dutch" cleanser, make a paste out of it and rub it into your knife with your fingers to get the black stuff left over from electrolsysis off of it. Repeat as necessary until its clean. I do this with old coins alot. You will greatly decrease the value of any coin by cleaning this way!!!!!! But I dont care about the value much, especially if I couldnt even read the date when I started and I now have a coin that looks great!  I dont recommend this for your old coins that might have high value. There is so much more I could put here on this subject. I need to make a how to thread for everyone and I will go into greater detail when I do.  Detecting I hope you find some great stuff at your ghost town!!!!  Any questions you have just email me I have about 25 years of experience in electrolysis and cleaning finds to lend anyone that needs it.  Wise

Oh shit, forgot to tell you, dont use any stainless silverware that you want to keep, it will be destroyed fast lol. Your wife will Keel you if you use some from her sets!!!  Violent also I use a very thick old glass, it will need to be scrubbed often and make a new solution for every different type of metal you try. I use the same mix for about 3-7 pennies then clean the stainless and glass with a wire brush and make a new salt water batch. Never use electrolysis on silver or gold, its not necessary and better cleaning methods work on those 2 metals, other than those 2 metals, it works great on anything, iron, bronze, brass, copper, zinc, alulminum, etc........Caution!!  you will remove the patina from old coins!!! and decrease the value of them!!!

dangit!!  Also.......iron objects like your knife for example, may take a very long time to clean, Ive left heavily rusted items in the bath for many hours......Never leave anything without being close by!!! you can start a fire doing this!! The transformer and wires get very hot, I always keep an eye on things. If your doing a larger heavily rusted item, it may take hours and days of dropping it in the mix while your close by. I have setup a large cooler with salt water outside for large items to leave going for days before.

I'll make an in depth how to thread on this when I get time. Theres alot to know on this simple subject, but electrolysis is one of the best ways to cleanup some things!!!

Now that you are a full member, go to the downloads area and see the electrolysis system there. It sounds exactly like what you use.

I believe the emblem is for a vintage Winchester knife.
