Here in NM we have fires like that every year.

They toast Cow's, Prong Horn Antelope, Deer, And a few if not more houses, Ranches and other good stuff.

Mind ya, they have been here for millions of year and will be here behind us. They Tastes Good Too!

By the way. How did you do the coil mount to the shaft?

I use 2 electrical PVC pipes for the swivel part in between I use a T piece but I will take a photo and post it for you much easier than trying to explain  Smiley

I also have a photo of the golf balls that I need to post Damn 26 of them  Grin and those were the ones that we could see on the surface, bet that there are a lot more under that pile of ground where we found them (They dredged the water holes of the golf course)

I believe that X has had a number of snakes on the farm. I am careful of my surroundings, but must admit I do not let snakes worry me  Great

Found 7 in one pile or rocks, horrid slithering creatures they are the spiting cobras Had one that was almost 2 meters I must find that photo and post it too.

Sorry I havent been on dealing with inner ear infection and vertigo.

Sure hope you come right with that ear infection there mate. I had one once and from what I can remember about it, is that it was very painful

Renegade, wish you the best with the inner ear infection and vertigo!  I haven't had any problems with them, but my wife used to work for an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor...   lots of people with lots of problems with them.

Peter. Bad Grass!  Damn spitting slitherers!  I've spent most of my life around this area and a lot of time in nearby areas with our rattlesnakes.  Only one time I came face-to-face with one coiled, rattling and ready to strike...  which fortunately  he didn't!  I was moving fast and just kept going past him.  Didn't spot him till my foot was just a few inches from him...  I just kept on movin'!   That alone was not a fun experience and I had no weapon.  I do now!               Detecting

Xavier, What instruments would I need to make a larger coil for my Fisher F75 and get it matched to the machine? Teach

Arfieboy, do those ratlers not warn you before you get to them  Shocked Umm, maybe you woke him up from his siesta  Grin Grin If you get X to give you his secrets on a large coil, maybe you will find a couple of my gold coins? If you do, just remember to return them,,,, I have counted them all  Welcome

Hi gambol1

You will need an inductance meter but it's not that simple first you will need to find out what cap is in the LC circuit you then have to know at what frequency the detector is running at but you probably already know that. The hard part is to match the wire gauge so that you will have twice as many turns on the receiver coil than on the transmitter coil you will probably also want to know what is the capacitance of the coil, if at all possible the wire gauge that was used in the original coil. Do not use the trial and error method rather collect as much info on the original coil to try and keep the new coil as close to the original specs. Another thing that I would do if I were you is get hold of GD he has a huge amount of information and a lot of good ideas and tricks to get the job done right. If you can get hold of an old coil you could open it up and measure the inductance of each coil also you could match the wire gauge.

Yes, I do have some corporate knowledge on the subject as I hold a few patents on MD circuits and have design experience.

One of the biggest mistakes made by those who want a larger coil is to go too big. Easily done. Your machine doesn't have infinite power and my not have enough to drive a larger coil. Keep that in mind. Second, remember that the time of field collapse (VERY important) is critical in the detection of metals using a large coil. The time that it takes for the field to fully collapse must be determined before you proceed. When you turn on the TX pulse in a standard coil, the collapse time is figured into the equation and the time at which the RX circuitry is enabled is delayed so that the TX coil itself won't overdrive the circuitry and give you false or no readings. You'll need to develop a Smith Chart. Look up the formulas and procedures right here and see what you need to do that.

Sound complicated? It surely is. Just ask Xavier how many experiments he has performed to get his basic machine running. He's become an expert over the past couple of years doing experiments regarding coils and coil sizes.

The complexity of adding a larger coil is real. Manufacturers really can't give you an answer because you really need to know the electronics inside the machine to do the proper job. In the case of a coil that is 1m X 1m, for example, the timing has to be adjusted so the coil won't be useless or give less than optimum performance. That timing change will mean that you can only drag it across the ground at a snail's pace to get any reading at all. Basically, a detector MUST be designed around a coil and not the other way around. Designing a coil for an existing machine is a fool's errand in most cases.

Yes, they do, most of the time!  He was buzzing his rattles, and I was walking down a hill at a fast clip.  I just could not spot him in the grass and rocks.  Just as my foot hit the ground in front of him, I saw him.  He was about a foot from my foot, so I just kept walking at the same fast pace I had been walking!  He was coiled and ready to go...  I still don't know why he didn't strike!  I'm guessing he was a 2 1/2 foot to 3 foot snake!  I was wearing an 8 inch high boot at the time and it may have kept his fangs from penetrating...  but you never know!

Xavier, is it your birthday I see posted on the birthday board today?  Or is that some other Xavier somewhere else?  If it is you, "Happy Birthday!!"  If it is not you, then just ignore this greeting!
