Hi Indi, welcome to the forum. I am also new to the art of detecting and want to learn a lot more. You mentioned that somebody gave you advise on how to approach people to do detecting on their land, but the link doesn't seems to work. I've  been wondering how I would approach the owner of the farm on which the Attekwas wagon trail is situated.

PGill I saw your video and enjoyed it very much, how did you approach the owner of the land?

I am visiting my sister in Alberton on the 12 Jan 2011, and wondered if somebody can give me a reference to a business which sells metal detectors in that part of of Gauteng.

Thanks

Oh sorry odd. Im just going to copy past the email from him, gives me a good idea on how to start.

Dear Bronwyn

Yes your pic?s are terrible indeed ha ha.

Basically it is against the Heritage whatever they call themselves (I call them Kentucky eaters or Fish and chips) rules to dig in the ground, however they do not have a problem with picking stuff off the ground, however what we do is contact the land owner first, actually do this by writing him a letter asking for permission to ?hunt? on his land, telling him that whatever we find, he will have first option on anything found, normally they do not want anything, then in your letter you also tell him that you will pick up any wire, nails or glass, items that can hurt his animals.

Once he has given you permission, it is then best to plan an outing, do not take all your friends along with you, do not make any fires for a braai, be carefull if you smoke, in fact do not smoke on his property, you can also sign an indemnity and give it to him stating that you have no chance or ways to try and sue him if you hurt yourself on his land etc.

What I have done is, if I visit a certain area, I then visit the local museum if there is one, I then make up a display of various items that I have found in that area and donate it to the museum or school, this is a token of Goodwill, you can even go further and give one to the farmer or land owner as well.
I will send along a few pic?s of some of the displays that I have made up over the years and that I have donated to museums and schools.

Depending on your financial position will also determine what machine you can buy, but be warned you will be told that this or that machine is better than this or that machine, you must remember that the best machine that works for you is the one to buy, however we find that The Minelab Soverein GT or The Exterra 50 works best for us, I have three machines, A Soverein GT , An Excalibur 1000 and an Exterra 30, all three wonderful machines indeed.

Chat again later

All the best

Regards
Simon

Hi Viking

At the moment I'm working my butt off to have the money to continue with the project as you know it dose not come cheap but I'm getting there. I did not go and do any detecting for some time now here is how things went on the horrid windy days I had all the time that I wanted and when the wind subsided the work came in (bummer) any how I had time to do some rethinking about some issues that I had so it was not a total waist of time it never really is anyway. I have a few ideas that I want to try out I just need to find some diving gear ( all mine was stolen some time ago). I see that you have been quite busy I'd love to compare your CZ in the water with mine to see how much better the CZ is not to try and beat it.

Regards Xavier

Hi flamtech,

Great to have you also to join us... us SA guys are getting stronger by the day  Great

Glad you liked my movie..... All I did was to drive up to the place and went straight to the farmer and introduced myself and asked if I could detect the ruins.... He was very easy going... in fact he even told me that he is not interested in anything I find,but would like to see it. I have made up a DVD with that movie, and have printed out all the finds, and will give him that tomorrow as my appreciation. I just took the chance, and it paid off..... And I now have a property of about a 1km square that I have exclusive access to hunt on..... The farm is on the Gatsrand hills where the Boer war was also fought..... Could be good.

If you look up "Doculum" in the telephone directory they sell Garrett machines.... They are situated in the Randburg area. Otherwise "Viking" also sells machines, but would have to post it too you  Hello

Hey Flamtech
I ship nation wide but my new stock only arrives later this month.
@Indibean
Who is this Simon, I just trying to figure out if I know him and I would also like to see his display cases. I am about to do one for a farm that I have been hunting.
As far a machines go, get a good all rounder maybe look at the  Teknetics G2  or T2 as well. They
are really easy to use, extremely light and search deep.
@Xavier
The CZ is pretty good but I am still getting to know it. What you need to check is, how deep does it detect in the water. I have been at the Strand and it is maybe 5cm of white sand and then black sand. I was pulling 1c and 2c( the small ones) at up to 25cm roughly. Those little coppers really scream!

Hi Viking

Thats very good I take it that they are the old 1 and 2c as these new ones rust to bits LOL I will have to test with some old copper coins as soon as possible did you test it on normal soil? Mine likes the water and sand not the rocky kind of ground.
