And this discussion is no longer about metal detecting in South Africa. Switch it over to England or the United Kingdom, Peter.

His heart is still in SA but his body is in the UK and yes I do think that he should start a new thread called detecting in the UK but he will always be welcomed on this thread too.

He may be South African but he is now detecting in the UK. All I ask is we be consistent. We can't allow wildly off topic discussions just because somebody is a good pal. When he detects in South Africa again or when he wants to discuss YOUR actions there, no worries.

The simple fact is that some UK members here may not ever see these posts because they're not interested in the SA hunting or the Boer War.

Huffy? The official term is officious. And after several mile rebukes and kidding around about it, it's time we got serious. Those folks in the UK might be able to answer some of his issues but tney'll never see this. Too many posts in this thread means about half of the folks here just ignore it. They rightfully believe they won't understand the discussion at this point.

Let me remind everyone that this thread was started by South Africans for South Africans and all who wished to join in and with no particular topic.

I was also going to do a comparison to detecting in SA and the Uk

That would be great.

Ok, first off I forgot my camera  Funny Funny Funny but I did find Half a button from the 1600's and an end piece of a spur from the 1600's, the rest was junk.... I joined the Central Searchers detecting group from Northampton and signed up for the insurance you need here. This group detect most Saturdays, so should be a good group. Great Well we were detecting a field of many acres,,,, all 35 of us, but there was plenty of space to search  Shocked There were some Roman coins and also some Hammered coins found, but not a lot... I guess it was just one of those days  Cheesy

The worst part of the detecting here is that it was wet and muddy on the field, but just using a spade to dig the ground instead of a pick axe was great. The conductivity in the ground due to the wet ground and maybe what the soil is made from, made it easy to pick up a signal of a button half (7mm Dia) at about 8" deep using the Garrett Ace 250. 80% of the people were using the £1200.00 Deus which is a great machine, just a bit expensive for me  No no! I used my Garret Pro Pin- pointer for the first time today, which was an amazing piece of equipment, just in need of a little practice.

I would say it was a great day even though I did not find much. A good experience and much different detecting in the UK when compared to South Africa.

So there you have it.... my first detecting trip in the UK after all my escapades in South Africa....  Clapp Clapp Clapp
