I'm not certain on what the symbols represent, but watch a show (on tv or E-net don't remember) and they were searching for buried treasure that were marked with similar symbols. Good Luck on your search for the rest of those coins.  Detecting

Maybe some kind of reference or advertising material from a branding iron supplier?

Wow!!!!  Nice find.  Here is my take on the piece:

It looks to me to be Mayan hieroglyphs.  Possibly some type of measuring gauge, to evenly space clay bricks and or mud.  You can research that further if you wish.

Now for the deciphering part:

First take the photo you took of the piece and turn it upside down and start with the hieroglyph in the upper left-hand corner, then read from left to right ? top to bottom.

A.  First glyph = Meaning is equal to livestock.  Bulls, oxen, sheep, goats, and the like.
B.  Second glyph = Not sure, still researching.  Looks like a traveler or quest symbol.
C.  Third = Not sure, but it definitely has common ground with the second image. Flip this glyph upside down and it looks very similar to glyph 2, without the horizon line.
D.  Fourth = Rest, relax or sleep.
E.  Fifth = The snake indicates harm or some type of obstacle.
F.  Sixth = Water, river, shallow stream.
G.  Seventh = Many men, a lot of people, civilization.
H.  Eighth = A spot between 2 points.
I.  Ninth = Turtle usually means money, trade, value
J.  Tenth (bottom left) = Foliage, tree or trees, plants etc.
K.  Eleventh = Not sure.  Looks like a Masonic icon meaning friend, wife, family.
L.  Twelve = Open or shut door.  Maybe a false door.
M.  Thirteen = A glass or mug, usually associated with storing and drinking of water.
N.  Fourteen = Means royalty or leader of some type.
O.  Fifteen = The snake indicates harm or some type of obstacle. Notice the snakes head is up and ready to either defend or attack an enemy or foe of some type.
P.  Sixteen = The kettle means food, cleansing, bathing, nourishment.
Q.  Seventeen = Valley ? in this case a very deep valley.
R.  Eighteen = To see or view something. The way the point is down might mean buried or hidden in some way.

I will do some more research but I think with the information you have been given, you can follow-up on this.  Let me know if you find anything out.

Keep on  Detecting
Tex

This treasure hunting stuff is tons of fun. Has been for me, anyway. Decades of fun.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
