squid385;

I was not suggesting you were hoaxing, whoever, but I would suggest this may have been made fairly recently.  Shocked

The marks appear to be stamped (look at it with an eye loupe) as opposed to engraved... another point, about engraving, if it were engraved, the bottoms of the figures would show the base copper.  Wise

It may be conceivable that it could be a code key or ID from the Civil War era... research may or may not bear this out. As I said, my grandmother, born shortly after  the war, showed me some code, when I was around 10, used by blockade runners, but it was different.... there could have been several codes. Incidently, the code she showed me is related to the DESERAT alphabet.  Wise

I still think leather work punches could make these marks, even so, such tools have been around a long time, also.

Hey, I am just tossing ideas out there..... some may fit, some may not.   Idea

I never disbelieved in your finding of the article, that was never in question.... it just seems a bit well preserved for being really old. Cleaned or not.  Detecting

Peace! Great

I found one of those in a lake bed where the water level had dropped in Southern Oregon, but there had been a dump there before the lake I think, a stones throw from where I found it.. I assumed that it had been a bracelet. It is identical to the one that you found. Smiley

I think  it is a " Wing Wong for a Gooses Bridle " something you would find in a the bottom of a Rice Bubble packet and definatley nothing to do with Egyptology , or the Masons and I dont think the Incas had stirling silver plated anything .

Wow this is a grt. find, in my opinon its a Treasure map.. i can read some of it but need more time to read and understand it, but from i can see its telling you of a mine or treasure. its a cool find and your very lucky to have found it. Where did you find it, What state?Iam exited for you..... Graywolfs
OK heres what i got out of it for you, starting from the bottom right side, the first sign i dont know but the next one is the mans mark, the next is he traveled around and up a flat ortop of a hill, the next is he went down to the next sign, that is on the south side of two hills, go to the top of the hill on the lift, look for your next sign. travel down hill to a sign of the Turtle fowlo the head pointing the way. you may find signs of a indean camp there are two chest box under looken key , they well be covered up somwhere where there are two heads of rever or creek ,you,ll find the mine. the last two signs are that you need to travel by horse back1 1/2 league.so maybe 4 1/2 miles. this was fun i injoyed it. if i know the area you found this i could find the mine for you . becarefull of the death traps  .......Your friend Graywolfs.
The symbols say there are 2 boxs or chest buried maybe your coins are there i feell they are.

Thanks to all of you for your input on this piece. I do agree with Pookybear on it being a bracelet as mine was kind of bent up when I found it and could have very well been a bracelet. I'm glad to hear you found an identical one in Oregon. If you ever find out what it means, please let me know. The gold Louis D'or that I found in the same area was probably just a coincidence and had no relationship to the bracelet or whatever it is. Graywolfs, I found it on the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau here in Tennessee. I've been metal detecting and treasure hunting since the mid 1960's and this is one of the most curious finds that I have found.

Hi Squid
               Its good to see that you might have finaly solved the riddle of your find .  its amazing what some people come up with , Ive seen stuff that has been presented as ancient something or other when that person knows its not the real thing but a copy ,  and it sure gets everybody going for a while . lol  well it sure creates a conversation piece and kills the boredom ..
              Hope your next find might be a gold nugget or a civil war pistol ,, hang in there with that detector of yours
                                                                           Cheers
                                                                                         Detecting

They're definitely cattle brands.  They can't be native American symbols, because one of them is a keyhole, which isn't a traditional Indian symbol.   Undecided
