Haven't I seen these types of Symbols used by the Spaniards to mark treasure maps and for warnings to those who might try to steal a hidden treasure?

HH,

I know what you mean Golddigger... Its just two of the symbols I have seen on horses..... the rest Huh? I know branding symbols were related to families... and there is a lot of them and some that are not used anymore.. it is an strange item... not much corrosion to be found out under a rock.. It looks like something you get from one of the penny presses like disneyland... Wink I havent looked at alien symbology.. I guess that is my next place to search... Grin

ksightler;

I was wondering if it started as a hoax and the wrong person found it, because I dont mean to imply the forum contributor is the hoaxer. Not without more evidence, certainly.

I got ya.... Does that happen here very often? It is a strange piece... I did think it looked kind of new... I see what happens to coins that been exposed to weather for a few months... years... I'd think the thing would turn green as it does look like a copper alloy. But I am still investigating it as it is very interesting......... How about you Brian? Have you found any fakes... coins? or something that seemed like a real artifact but a new copy? How long have you been searching for treasure using a metal detector? I just started..... I have search wrecks (Newer wrecks - less than 20 years old). I am interested in finding pre-1800s wrecks... Galleons...

Hello Everyone. Looking at that Relic Symbols again on page one , reminds me of the movie "National Treasure" and something that Benjamin Franklin and the Free Masons would have made in the 1700'S ?

ksightler;

OK

You found the curb bit, the diamond/fish is a diamond that has had a running iron used on it, to make a fish sign (it has been altered, the two parts, at different times, are  easy) and last, that is a rocking horse, NOT a rocking chair.

That is good, though, you get A for effort. The curb bit is the best match.

Hello again to all. Sorry that I haven't replied to this post in a while. I been busy working on another project. Thanks for all of your help in trying to ID this piece. First off, it is made of copper with a silver plate and I cleaned it with a silver cleaner several years back, thus no corrosion. It did have some green corrosion(patina) especially on the edges where the copper was exposed. It was only about two inches deep in loose sand rock and it was found in a very remote location. It isn't a hoax. I don't really care if anyone believes me or not, for I know the facts about where and when it was found. I just wanted to see if anyone could help ID it. I do want to thank you all for your opinions and help. Bye-the-way, the Louis D'or is gold not silver.

Even if you could identify every one of the symbols and translate them you still need a reference. That being said, it sure is a lovely piece and a fascinating find.
