Hi all,

Does anyone know what this may be? It was found at a Boer war site, but till now we cannot figure out what it was used for. Not sure if civil war has anything similar or the same?

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,

Nothing jumps out at me, but the photo is a little fuzzy.   Is there any chance of getting a clear shot (using a tripod, perhaps)?  I do like the horizontal and vertical scales, though.   Those are a big help.
If you can't get a clearer picture of the entire item, can you get us a close up detail of the rings (the section from 2.5 inches to 5 inches on the horizontal scale).
Also, given the dates of the Boer war, we might want to look at Franco-Prussian and/or WWI analogs.

BA

The part in the middle looks like an early design of a P-38 or P-51

Thats a good idea Seldom, I'm sure they had rations in tins. The rings are intriguing, are they for attaching or have a functional purpose?

Wondering also if it could be a form of rope tensioner for tents or such. Just a guess though. Interesting item hopefully someone can ID it.

Hi Seldom,

What is this P-38 P-51 you are talking about? This item is made of steel and is about 3 mm thick at the thinest section, about 10mm wide all along. Not sure why such big links, but they are  about 25mm dia and also 3mm thick.

Idaho Jones, the tent thing could be a possibility.... must try and research that idea.

Thanks guys for the ideas.

God bless
Peter

I'm wondering if it's part of an old rifle...... the part the "sling" goes through?
