Hello All

I have spent many a time camping in the Australian bush. The great eastern dividing range that runs from Cape York in Northern Australia down to southern Victoria that spans several thousand km. The original Forrest belt was about 150-200km at its widest before the range slowly descends in flat scrub plain in the west to eventual desert.

Large areas due to settlement have been cleared over 200 years or so. However there are still large areas of wilderness. I have often wondered how an animal of that sort would survive in this type of wilderness. But the Aboriginal people had survived for thousands of years in the same region. They have their own lore about the Yowie. So if the supposed Yowie exists then I would guess for it to survive It would have to be omnivorous and be an opportunist hunter and gather.

I cannot say I have seen a Mythical Yowie in person. But I have met people who claimed to have seen one or should I say been near one. Once I was shown an old photograph taken in the 60's or 70's of a couple of campers drinking around a campfire. Down on the South Coast of N.S.W in between two mountain Peaks called The Castle and Pigeon House.

Unknown to the campers or the photographer at the time the happy snap caught possibly a little more than just campers drinking around the fire. In the background there is a image of some thing that resembles the classic shadowy profile image of a Yowie or Bigfoot standing in the shadows next to a tree.

I was told they only discovered the presence of this mysterious visitor to their campsite, after getting their film processed showing this strange hunched ape like figure well over 6ft tall standing next to a tree. I do not know if I was having my leg pulled or it was only an unusual background image or trick of the camera due to twilight.

They went back to the same campsite about a month later to match the photograph with the actual location of the tree. They were surprised to see what ever was next to the tree was not there and a little branch that was near the head of this mysterious figure in the back ground of the photograph was measured and was nearly 7 foot tall.

What I found interesting is at the time I was told the story. They told me the exact location of the campsite and they apparently marked the tree to the height level of the figure in the Photograph.

A few years later I camped at the very same spot as the site is a fairly popular camping spot, and we had a pleasant week end of hiking climbing and swimming with the odd ale or two. But I must admit I had a slight chill ran through me when I saw the grown over marks on the tree making the height of the alleged creature taken in the Photograph.

Was the story I was told true I do not Know. But it makes one hell of a good campfire story with a few ales around a nice camp fire in some dark primeval Forrest. Grin

Hardluck  Wink

Hello Moondog2000

The alcohol helped Grin

But nothing out of the ordinary happen when I stayed there. There was a beautiful fresh water creeks full of fish, Yabbies and fresh water turtles. Very pristine.

The two following picture is view of pigeon house on the horizon ( the peak that looks like a nipple ) and the view from the peak. Incidentally pigeon house was first mountain peak named by captain Cook who saw it from the sea.

If your interested I can post newspaper stories dating from the turn of the last century of Yowies sightings before it was fashionable for people to claim to have seem them?

Back then they referred to as wild hairy men or Native Apes.

In New Zealand, the Local Maori legends talk of some Redmen ?  This is in one area of the north Island.
I was watching a doco about the bigfoot in north America, and there was some audible recordings of the bigfoot. Not long after watching this doco, I was camping out and a very similar sound came across! just shortly after dark, it happened about 10 years ago now, but I don't think il forget that anytime soon  Cool
