Way to go! Don't get discouraged, it will happen!
I've gotten several great books on Amazon.com. They sure do help, and are great reading when you can't get out and hunt.
Keep at it, this is a fun hobby!

Just a small update, yesterday afternoon I went out to my yard again, and the second target was a qtr, about 2 inches deep that came up with the first plug I dug, it was awesome. Its not an old qtr but its the only thing of any value I've found in this yard. I needed that. Thanks very much to everyone for your encouragement and tips. I will call the library as soon as they open GD. Thanks again, its nice to know this forum is so helpful.

A quarter is a fine coin to locate for your first one. But think about it. You did find another treasure. You found a bit of experience.

Well done on both! Keep on swinging that coil!

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Hey EJ, it takes time and a lot of diggin to learn the machine and gain experience with it, i've been at this since 1978 and still enjoy every minute when i can get out to detect. I always carry a good old screw driver for when the soil is hard pan clay it will help you to loosen up the dirt or small rock in the soil. Also i get Western & Eastern Treasure Magazine lots of good reading and tips that will help you learn the tricks of the trade. A Quarter is always a good find. Keep at it never give up. Happy huntin.....DW

EJ, I use a sharpshooter type shovel with the last six inches cut off end of blade with hacksaw  and the "new edge" sharpened on a grinder-your husband could do this easily for you. This digging tool is really nice and will fit in smaller diameter hole in ground. Use a hand trial. Cut a hole in tennis ball and shove end of handle into ball--this makes a very comfy grip that you can force into soil and your palm is cushioned by the ol' tenny ball-ha! Good hunting to you!
You'll find big iron with Tesoros no matter what usually--but the scrim is really good at tuning out most small iron and stuff--it's according to how you set it.

Yes keep going..... as BackAtcha said this is not a job it's a hobby. Anything special or worth something to another person is a bonus, but finding something by yourself is a thrill. And you gain some metal detecting experience as you go along, you'll get better at it. As a saying goes.....No Pain No Gain  Wink

Go Up Go Down

this reminds me of a little tale i learnt many years ago I used to tell at some of the lectures I used to give when I was younger in Australia.  Everyone gets discouraged at one time or another and it pays to know this.

One day the devil was holding a garage sale and he had all his goodies up for bids if you gave the devil your soul you could have any one of his most powerfull tools.

There was his famous hour glass, his scythe which he could demolish anyone in seconds and a vast array of other goodies on offer.

In the corner stood a pedestal on placed on it was a simple wooden wedge together with a sign saying Not for SALE.

When ask why that simple wedge wasnt for sale the devil replied, "That my friend is the wedge of discouragement."
The devil was then asked what was so special about it, to which he replied, "well you see no matter what other tool anyone uses with that simple wedge I can stop any of my other tools working and after a time people give up with being discouraged.

Its the same as two mice who fell into a large vat of milk and one said to the other how do you get out?
The other mouse said just keep swimming and you will get out eventually.  But that mouse was unable to keep swimming and eventually got tired and drowned.  The mouse who kept swimming eventually turned the milk into cheese and was able to get to the side and jump out.   We all get moment when youve been out without having any success it sounds to me like your not doing much digging and trying to analyse signals to be honest try digging some of those targets and see how you go dont give up.  Cheesy

Hi EJ, i am pleased that you are getting finds now, you have had some really good adivce but the only thing i would say is that you at the start mentioned you were a bit overwhelmed with your back yard..sometimes you may feel like that on the beech or park number 1 dont give up.. number 2 always try and break your area down into squares or rectangles and only do as many as you feel like and then go back another day and do some more.
and if you ever feel down again come and talk it out again
Simon
