Thanks for the last few posts. I gave me more hope as a beginner.  Grin
Never thought of doing empty parking lots.

Anytime I'm feeling discouraged about what I'm finding (or not finding!), it helps me to check out pictures of what other detectorists have found.  Keeps me motivated.  You're not going to make big finds everyday... No no!

maybe you have droughts where you are? dunno but ever tried a dried up lake, river, stream, or resevoir? you never know what you will find there?   theres so many places for you to search just use your imagination see a empty bit of dirt go over it look at old ghost town the list is endless when you think of it.  Try tidal rivers even learn to think for yourself be an individual and the world will open up to you.  Go for it only you can do it for yourself.  good luck  Smiley

Of course you will have to TAKE A HOLIDAY to devote time to ghost towns, and stuff. I understand completely the difficulty of squeezing time.  Cool

My grandmother used to call  it *the can,t-help-its,* when one gets to that stage.  Grin

Predator tools has a nice seltion of digging tools . Don't give up and learn your machine, Get some sample coins and wave them past your coil and see how your machine reacts, like tones and such.

We tried part of the butterfield stage coach road nearby but turned up only cans under the soft dirt. We will try some other areas later.

Good find !! This time a quarter, perhaps next time a silver walking-half. Try to be optomistic. I have laid off the hobby for about 5 years and have done a lot of research and I am getting that old feeling like I had when I first started detecting. Can't wait for the ground to thaw !

Go Up Go Down

When I get discouraged, I think of the other benefits I'm getting from metal detecting.  Or I distract myself for a while by entertaining one of my other hobbies, (rock collecting, photography, watching the wildlife or the people around me).  Then after my break, I'll either move to another area, or I'll decide that for the next 30 minutes or whatever, I'm going to concentrate on my search technique making sure my coil stays level and my sweeps overlap, or something else like giving myself "points" every time my pinpointing improves, regardless of what I recover.
Between the two (taking breaks to do something else and concentrating on technique), I can honestly say that no matter what my final tally is I feel good at the end of the hunt.   If nothing else, I've learned a few more secrets about how to use my detector.
(Which isn't to say there aren't moments when I think I should be concentrating on research and just go hunting for really large caches rather than playing in the dirt)

BA
