Great advice Simon! This way You can take maximum of Your backyard! Just dig up everything You can find. When You have done all squares then just test randomly the squares again Smiley

You're lucky, I have only been mding for 2 weeks and have yet to find a quarter, only 2 pennies a nickel and a 40's herring can.

Try changing the type of search area. Gravel and dirt parking lots are good, especially if it is where a place of business means money exchange. You would be surprised how often coins wind up, on the ground, when getting into a  vehicle. Especially at watering holes.

Beaches are easy digging.

No one said this was an easy hobby, just very interesting and sometimes rewarding!

One thing no one has suggested.... talk the OM into doing the digging, until you *get the hang of it.*

If he digs some good things, from those deep finds, he is going to be excited about it and will forget about complaining! You have to employ some psychology.

Thats a great suggestion!  I love it when I can get my guy to come with me, and I search with the coil, mark a spot, and he uses the pinpointer and digs up the targets.  After awhile, we trade off.  We can cover a lot more ground that way than I can alone, and I dont get so sick of digging! Kiss

Glad it works.

In return, you feel sorry for me, my ground is frozen! No more digging until next spring... with luck, April, otherwise May.  Cry Cry

All I can do is read what others are digging and feel sorry for myself!  Shocked

Hi EJ, I have detected in Australia for years and it takes time. I started hunting for old silver and copper coins as well as our dollar and 2 dollars. I have not used the detector you have so am not sure what you would set it on in Discriminating. I would take all metal out for a start and put the Discrimination someware between 6 and 8 Just where you councle out ringpulls. so you don't get to much rubbish while you learn. This way you don't have so many targets. I use a large Screw Driver to dig up coins as that is what I am looking for. You will cut out Gold items with this setting but you can change your setting when you get used to finding good targets. Good places to look for Coins are around old house steps. in Parks under clothes lines. Look under trees as kids play there in Parks where people lay in the shade. The beach is good if the salt don't worry the detector. Kids also play on fences and loose coins. look where people gather and in time you will be finding items. I find for a start you are better doing it this way as you don't loose intrest if you find good targets. you will get deep coins 6 or more inches so you need to dig them. Hope this helps you to starte finding targets. Ken

Go Up Go Down

I'm reading all this, but I haven't been out since that day I found a quarter in my own yard. I've thought of a great place to go close by, but just can't make myself get out there and do it. It will be digging in sand so it should be fairly easy diggin. It seems like I've always got other stuff to get done before noon, then I  have to be here to open up our business at home. But I know if I really wanted to go I'd make time. So I'm concerned this may not be the hobby for me. When I think of going out anywhere I'd have to dig in real dirt, there's no way I'm going. I'm totally burnt out on digging in the dirt. Not a good sign Embarrassed Thanks everyone

No one hates digging dirt more than me...(thats why I get my husband  to come with me)  Get a pin-pointer. My husband got me one, and it really helps with when you get the hole started.  You just point in in the hole and you can tell where you need to dig out, and by the sound how near your target is. It has saved me many times.  I have a Garrett pin-pointer.  Also if you really don't feel like digging to deep and have the time when you pull into a vacant lot, just point it around on the ground. I have found so much just an inch down.

It always is fun when you find something. Anytime you have second thoughts, just send me a note.

Happy hunting!!!
SharenH

Try the sand boxes in all the tot-lots you can reach.... they would be easy digging, and you will not just find kid stuff, but often stuff lost by adults! One of the former forum persons certainly demonstrated that with his finds... even gold and diamonds! Do not get Agoraphobia at this stage!  Grin
