Go Up Go Down

Hi all,
I'm curious if anyone here knows how to set up a search grid for metal detecting using a GPS?

Basically I want to be able to thoroughly search and area and then search next to it with little or no overlap, that way I can methodically work my way across a large area. Detecting

Thanks.

Just set a Start point.

Walk a Path setting Way Points at set intervals.

Move over 4ft and Start Again.  Just walk a Path reverse of first travel.

Most Consumer GPS are just about Good enough to do that.

My Historic Magellan is good for three or four feet.

Like Seldom mentioned. Probably depends on the size of the area. Most consumer GPS units probably would not give you enough repeatable accuracy to do a small grid search. For that just eyeball a land feature like a tree and work to it then reselect another and continue reverse. I've also used some fiberglass sticks about 18" long and placed them as I detected and on the return pick up the stick and move it to your other side.

Well, it is a hillside around an old mine that my gr-gr-grandfather operated along with his brother and was reportedly a very rich strike. The area has a number of quartz outcroppings and I am mostly looking for pocket or bench deposits.

Being a hill side it could be a few acres to several 100. I don't think a GPS is the answer looks like you will need to go old school and grid it out with stakes and string.

You're probably right, I just wanted to ask others to get a better idea if it might work with a GPS.

Thanks

I think that an I-pad would be very helpful to you but like Seldom pointed out doing it the old school way is probably the best.

Old school is the best if you can,,,,, most GPS's are accurate to a point but very rarely to the exact spot..... I have used the "Trails" app before and found it to help, but again not 100% accurate.... old school is best.
