I don’t know much about the conditions in other parts of the world, but here in the gold fields of Victoria Australia I had a lot of trouble years ago with my analog machine because of the ground conditions. The soil here has a high concentration of minerized rubbish that used to make my detector scream. This was back in 1980 and I can’t remember the brand of the detector. It was a good brand, expensive, and had a good reputation. But it was useless in this type of soil. Now I have heard that the new digital machines (pi) are good at discriminating against this mineralized soil, and I reading up on what’s available, because I’m planing to have another shot at finding beautiful nuggets.

Well thats what is good about the new machines they can handle most conditions and some will go in places where
only PI machines would work.

I'll back you up on this one.    I like the Analog that sing the songs.

I don't much like the Blip, Ding, multi tone things.

TDI just looses the goods for ya if you follow there lead.  LOL!

Homie I don't believe we are better off with all this digital stuff, My machine are digital but in an analog format and thats
as far as i think it needs to go, we need to stop somewhere and no matter what they keep sticking on these things it is
Physics that dictates how it works not gizmos, Go back to the Whites Eagle II sl 90 it can do more than any other new machine
it's made in 1990 hence its name, and it can go just as deep, I cant remember if it is digital or not but it is 21 yrs old so we
are going around in circles. food for thought hhmmm

For my money, the single biggest advantage "modern" digital machines have over the old analog machines is weight.   I sure like the lighter weight of the digital machines, but I prefer the way the analogs fed out the information.

Thats right BA, one thing i did miss out was because of digitalization we now get better battery life which is a bonus

Give my Whites 5500D Series 3 a big thumbs up!

Today I went to a nearby park to test it out. I went by an old tree and heard that sweet sound of my analog machine finding something good. Okay, Okay.......it wasnt much but I dug approx 9 inches down and found an 1883 V Nick in approx xf condition! I was surprised because I haven't used a detector in over 20 years.

I think that learning your machine will make a big difference your success.

Hi

This unit does not have the 950 coil on it. It seems that the 5500D Series 3 black box came with either coil. I have an 8" coil on it but its not the 950 coil.

Like I said in previous posts, you've got to learn the machine, and I am learning each day.
Thats why I asked earlier if the Blue Max 800 coil would work with my machine and you sent me the link that said it would.

Thank you

Mike M

I haven't had or used a detector in over 30 years. Thinking about taking up nugget hunting again, and would like to know what advances have been made in detector technology.

First question:- which technology can detect the deepest - analog or digital?

Hey everyone!  Thanks for all you input.  I like the idea of the hybrid detector of analog/digital with digital brains and analog controls and readout.  The weight factor of the digital makes lots of sense, plus the less battery drain of digital.  But...    until I find something better, I think I will stick with my old analog detectors!~

I guess I am just an old analog guy in a new digital world!
