For my money, the single biggest advantage "modern" digital machines have over the old analog machines is weight.   I sure like the lighter weight of the digital machines, but I prefer the way the analogs fed out the information.

I said it once and I'll say it again,You gotta have the guns if you want to swing old school...  Wink

Alfie, the MXT range = 3 models are what you are talking about the MXT has a gloss finish, the MXT 300 has a matt finish and
a 12" coil, and the MXT Pro has a matt finish + 12" coil, a back light , ground grab button and 7 tone ID, but they are deep
and they were based on the GMT gold machine because that was what the MXT was surposed to be but they worked so hard
making The GMT that they had enough to build a true multi purpose gold machine and they share the same insides.
So the MXTs are real hot on gold and the best bit there made in the U.S.A.

You can always Hip Mount the machine to your belt.  Now you just have the coil and wand to swing.

Compass used a J-Type set up but it's supper easy to build  a new Shaft out of a arm cuff Crutch.

I get the impression that most who have responded to this topic prefer analog machines. So I'm wondering what they are looking for and where they are looking. Are they just using their detectors to look for things like coins on sandy beaches.

I'm interested in gold nuggets. So what I would like to know is which in best - analog or digital - for nuggets in difficult soil conditions.

The price tag of a Minelab GPX-4500 is around the $6000 mark. What makes this machine so expensive? does anyone know? Has anyone used one? I would love to see a schematic of this machine and know what features make it so special.

You're going to find that a lot of those folks who prefer analog machines hunt anything and everything, including gold nuggets.  And I know at least a couple of them hunt nuggets in Australia.    The divides probably more along the lines of how long they've been hunting than what they hunt for.   And it's not to say that most of them don't also have digital machines they use.   They just have a love for the analogs.   Sort of like having a love for a really good phonograph recording played on a great stereo system vs listening to a mp4 recording.  You'll also find they tend to focus on sound (and sometimes the sweep of the meter) rather than have the on board computer "interpret" the results for them, so they pick up subtle changes rather than focusing on read-outs.

Hugget seeker, The GPX 4500 is a great Pulse induction machine but dont over look The Whites TDI Pro because that is also
A Pulse machine and it can be set up to discriminate and it will cost you only half the price.

Ridge Runner? I'm sure the TDI pro is a great machine, and I imagine there are a lot more good detectors out there. But what I want to know is why - what features or capabilities do they, and other good PI detectors have that makes them so good?

What should a person like me, who has been out of touch for 30 years and what to start again, look for in a good gold detect?

I have no intention of buying a gpx 4500. I can't afford one. I'm just interested in knowing peoples opinion about any good detector that cost so much. What can such an expensive machine do, that cheep ones can't do?

I would be looking for a detector that had very good depth, High sensitivity, A real auto ground balance, or manual or better
still both, and alot of differant coils available, and a meter and low battery consumption along with the ability to work in many
types of ground, and a detector that as your knowledge grows the detector must be versatile enough to grow with you,

its a big list is'nt it, well I have served my time with detectors and i have gone as far as possible apart from building my own,
and i have now found the best that suits the conditions that i use them in and my hunting style.

I hopes this helps.
