Question:

Anybody out there beside myself have a preference for analog detectors rather than all the newer digital detectors?  Back in the mid-80's I bought a Compass X-70 (oh, how I miss the Compass brand)  and it has been a great detector!  I have updated a couple of times including a digital detector.  I hated it it!  Not that I didn't make some great finds with it,  I did.  But I just hated the way it operated and the process involved in making the slightest adjustments with it.  It was a major pain.  It wasn't a cheapie detector, either, one of the top brands and near the top of the line.  I still have it, but I seldom use it because I much prefer my old Compass X-70.  It is fun to operate, easy to adjust and tweek it if I need to, and it still makes great finds.  In the last year I purchased a Compass X-200 off of E-bay.  I'm in the process of learning it, but it is very similar to the X-70 and fun to use.

Any thoughts on this subject out there?

Those baths do tend to have negative results!

The old school lunch box detectors are my faveriots. That's all I used and I have just started buying modern machines starting about 8 years ago.The lcd screens are really not much of a use to me,I detect by sound only. The one plus side to the modern machines is the lite weight of the units. My old whites is built like a tank and this does add weight to this machine, but if you got the guns to swing it then there is no problem,if you don't have the guns then it will give them to you if you swing it. Grin
I know detectors has came a long ways over the years and there is some great modern machins out there but I guess I'm just stuck in the past.
Gotta love them old school machines......  Great

I still use a old Garrett BFO unit for relic hunting and at times I will use a groundhog are master hunter both from Garrett.
As Steveo pointed out most of us hunt by sound, dig it all and never use the read out its not right most of the time anyway. This may be why the Tesoro silver umax is becoming so popular.

Go Up Go Down

Hi,

I use a Compass Judge 2 Automatic and a Whites 5500 D Series 3 black box and I am very happy with both of their performance. I learned to metal detect on the whole Compass line of metal detectors years ago from my parents business, (they were Compass dealers) and have been away from detecting for 20+ years.

I have recently tried a few of the Whites digital units and while they may be the latest and much more modern in technology, I still prefer the analog units.

If you listen to what your detector is saying by sound and by the characteristics of the meter you will have as much success as anyone using the new digital units. Its all about how well you learn your machine.

Thanks everyone for your replies for today.  I was just wondering if I was the only throwback to earlier times or not.  I glad to learn that I'm not the only one.  Several people said they detect by ear, and I do mostly also.  Only trouble is that is starting to go now with age and an incident long ago in a country far across the sea.   Anyway, I love the old analog meters for pinpointing as opposed to the lcd screens.

I don?t know much about the conditions in other parts of the world, but here in the gold fields of Victoria Australia I had a lot of trouble years ago with my analog machine because of the ground conditions. The soil here has a high concentration of minerized rubbish that used to make my detector scream. This was back in 1980 and I can?t remember the brand of the detector. It was a good brand, expensive, and had a good reputation. But it was useless in this type of soil. Now I have heard that the new digital machines (pi) are good at discriminating against this mineralized soil, and I reading up on what?s available, because I?m planing to have another shot at finding beautiful nuggets.
