Just sitting here looking at the topics, and I see lots of new people joining everyday. (I myself am new to this web site but I realllly enjoy everything.) But I was wondering if the bad economy we've been having, was helping people get involved with detecting? It's a fairly cheap hobby to get started in, you can usually do it fairly close to home, the excitement of what is out there. Being able to get outside and enjoying nature. Even take the family and picnic maybe. I put the hobby aside about 10 years again to get my business going, and I really missed it. Lucky for me there are only a few maybe 3 of us in the area who detect, so there are alot of hot spots still waiting, I still have my old bounty hunter it doesn't work very good anymore but I can't seem to chuck it out it's like a old friend who found me lots of good finds. I hope my new omega is as good.   thanks  the heathen1

I don't know if anything is affecting the detecting hobby one way or the other, I do know that my coinshooting finds have dropped off and I have to work harder for coinshooting, everything else is the same for me it seems, just gotta work harder-but then mebb cause Iv'e got older, anyway, your'e Omega is OK  It'll do a fine job, Happy Hunting from Indiana Detecting

I've noticed that there aren't lots of pennies everywhere like there used to be - I always felt like I should pick up those coins in parking lots, gas stations, etc as I would if I was in the park detecting - plus they were clean.

People just dont have the money!

I sell at the flea market and they look, Talk, and barter but want to pay 10 cents on the dollar of value.

I sell for 1/2 market value and they want it for less.

 Idea

Go Up Go Down

Ironically I did sort of get into the hobby due to the economy.  As my business slowed down as it always does in the winter, I got bored and it's been too cold to get in a boat.  The price of gold was going up, so I said Hmmmm... and started prospecting on a hobby level.  It keeps me busy, keeps my bones warm, and if I never make more than 15 cents out of it it keeps me happy.  I've always enjoyed panning for gold in the local streams and have made a few dollars here and there from the placer gold I've found, but my invigorated interest in this hobby due to the value of gold skyrocketing has got me itching for spring so I can go get wet.  This time for dredging and not for boating.

Most of my prospecting these days is using a detector on a dried up stream bed on my property.  Have found a little bit but not enough to get rich.  One day though... one day I'll find that thigh thick quartz dam with a vein of gold through it as thick as my thumb.  That's the goal at least Smiley

If I hit that vein you can bet nobody on this site will ever hear about it, probably nobody other than the guy I sell the gold to.  I love you guys, but give me a break.  Finding a penny in a roll, or a coin in the ground, that's something to brag about... but finding a vein of gold can get you killed if you talk about it too much.

WHEN you find that vein we will probably never hear from you anyway.. you'll be sitting on a beach somewhere having a drink with one of those little umbrella's in it. looking at the tropical sunset and smiling... I hope it happens!!!

Once a treasure hunter always a treasure hunter. When a treasure hunter strikes it rich he or she just buys better equipment or starts a bigger Thunting corp  Grin

I know I would.  Smiley

Sue, I know what you mean, now that I am looking for change I don't see any Smiley When I would walk by pennies I would think all I need is 99 more for a dollar but generally I was too lazy to grab em. In Oregon you get 5 cent deposit for aluminum cans, I bet there is not a one in sight nowadays.

Homefire I did notice not only are buyers down, but vendors as well. Most people I think cant afford the gas to travel. I have my big 4x4 still, but I also bought a geo tracker last fall so I can scoot about cheap Smiley

I dumpster dive any time I see something of value poking out.

Yep! No Shame in it what so ever.

One man's trash is another mans Treasure.
