Go Up Go Down

Went to a Boer war site today that I have been to many times before...

Found a great button today, and after much cleaning and hard work, have got it to look pretty good.

{alt}

The button has just been washed and brushed with a toothbrush.

{alt}

This is a photo of the back of the button showing maker marks.

{alt}

The finished button, all nice a clean.... just a pity about the dent, but I will take it  Grin

Here is a video of the site.

That sure came out looking good. What did you clean it with? Any chemicals? I'm assuming it is probably made of brass.

Mudflap,

I am not sure if it is brass or copper as parts of the button look brass and others look copper..... Maybe a brass with a lot of copper in it  No no!

I used 4 x 10 second blasts of a low current electrolysis (with much care)... and used vinegar to clean the button.... left it soaking for some time and then used a soft toothbrush on it to get rid of the stubborn stuff  Violent I have since sprayed it with a lacquer spray to stop it from tarnishing further.

God bless
Peter

Hi Evilhomer, thanks for writing.... can you upload a photo of the badge? I would love to see it  Great There were many countries that ended up fighting in the Boer war, New Zealand being one of them. Australia was also big in the Boer war, although I have not found any of their relics yet.

Hey Peter I thought that I'll revive this one. You do have a good point there mate we never did find any Australian stuff at any of the sites?

I wonder what ever happened to the Scottish relics? Come to think of it that pipe lid that you found is typically Scottish and Dutch but the pattern on it should tell you it's origins.
