PS I don?t have any intention of smacking any one in the face.

I'll accept that slap in the face as long as you do it with a nice cut of filet minion.

Not if you're buying the steak, mate!

Why so long unemployed? Is that because of your chosen field of skills?

Xavier, since you are unemployed and can use all the help you can get, here are a couple of pieces of information on coils, which seem to be your current focus.

There is a two dimensional plotting device known as the Smith Chart which will help you in many ways. It can determine the overall impedance of a coil, the inductance and the coil radiation pattern which translates into a field pattern for detector coils. It's not an easy thing to learn from documentation but couple these two documents which I will add now to the Downloads area with a Google tutorial search and you'll be an expert in no time at all.

Neither of these is a substitute for the ARRL handbook I mentioned earlier which is a teaching handbook but they will introduce you to the real meat of coil design and use. Both are intended for RF use but the same exact formulas and pattern generation apply. You may have to use a scale factor in the math to get the audio frequencies to fit on the chart. Charts can be downloaded then printed from a number of free sources and a full pad of them can be purchased from ham radio shops.

I picked up my copy of the ARRL 2005 Handbook at my local library a number of years ago. It had a CD in the back of the book that contained the entire book as well as other goodies. I inserted the CD into my computer and saved the entire contents of the CD to my hard drive.
