Question: I noticed on your sample coil you wires were very neat and stacked. Is that a necessity or is it just personal preference?

Thanks

Sean

Hi Seanengman

If you are going to make more than one coil and you want them to operate in the same way with the same inductance you have to make coils that are neat if you are going to make a once off coil then jumble winding will be fine but you may loose out on a bit of performance (probably not even noticeable) on the other hand I had a schematic of a detector and the coil was to be 100 turns wound on any former of what ever was the diameter. I made two coils for this detector one I jumbled wound and it worked very well the other I wound nice and neat in layers and it did not work anymore(VLF). But I do believe in making neat coils for my PI detectors I believe that they will work better and yes it is a preference of mine.

All the best
Xavier

Most air core coils are scatterwound. Theoretically, when the coil wires are side by side there is a lot of interwire capacitance in the circuit. If this was taking into account in the design, it works very well. If not, it may cause problems. As you already know, you just have to try it.

Very neat project Xavier, nice design. Smiley

Another option for automating the wire placement might be to use the levelwind off an old fishing reel.

Hi Idaho Jones

Thanks I have put it on stand by for the moment but I will resume in a week or two just need to get some veroboard first to mount the electronics that is partly on veroboard and partly on breadboard so it looks like a birds nest at the moment LOL I also need to find a motor for it but I think that I know where to find one, so as soon as I have more done on it I will post some photos.

Regards Xavier

Not free, but very cheap. At 12v, 5 RPM and geared heavily, it should be a dream to control with a foot switch from a sewing machine.

At US$13.00 including shipping, it looks perfect for your application.

Looks quite similar to the one I'm using and a better price as I had to pay shipping from Electronic Goldmine.  I wasn't able to stall mine, when I increased my grip on the wire the spongy rubber wheel just skidded over the coil forms edge, powerful little buggers they are.

Yup that's pretty grodie alright but with a little TLC it should be more than ready for service.  I agree free is the best price.

Take care,
Dennis
