Mike, an in-line probe normally has a switch which temporarily disconnects the coil and connects the probe when you hold it down. Because of that, the probe must be the same impedance as the coil. Not, as some say, the same resistance. The size of the wire and the number of turns determine both the resistance and the impedance but wire size makes the resistance parameter unreliable regarding coil compatibility.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thank you again GD, I suppose I will just stick with the pin pointers I have. They work fairly well and unless its really small or real deep and small, I can usually find the item with out much effort. Its a good idea though, wonder why the major detector company's have not used the idea. I know why whites hasn't used it, well I'm just guessing-----there name brand pin pointer is rather pricey. Great Idea
Cornelius, I hope to see it standard one day on all top of the line detectors...ooops my bad, was just on another post a they do make them for some metal detectors. But the cable didnt look very long-Modern Tech stuff ya got to love it...

I don't use pin pointer to hunt .

I am thinking of building one of these to Crevice Gold though.

I have a unemployed Whites Surf master board .

Hello  homefire
Is there a lot of Gold,in NM,,,i guess that's a round about question, meaning enough to go out and with a reasonable amount of time find and ounce or so...There are places in Va to look for gold,,but from looking at there forums it does not seem like a lot is found.
Would a Whites pin pointer do the same thing as the one you are thinking about building? Or is the Whites not sensitive enough for small gold?
I'm also new to forum, and wading my way through the post. Not sure if we have posted yet to the same page....So hellooo and glad to meet you...And Isn't NM a part of Texas,,the back Porch or something? Just kidding,really----
I hope its warm down there where your at, becuase it is cold up here in Va,,,,when I was a kidd in west Texas-visiting of course , the terrain seemed to be sandy, and hot.
                                                                     Mike

Ha!   Lots of Gold?

I've been unemployed for the past 11 months.

If I could do a quarter Oz a month I could be most happy.

Yea , it's out there but it takes money to make money.

Most of the good stuff has been claimed up and is a NO NO.

There are spots you can hit but lucky to do a Gram or two a day.   Just pays gas and food.

A Friend lets me hit his claim from time to time but it's so far away I can't to it much.

Mostly I just hit the Pinos Altos area in the clear spots.

I don't think the Whites would do the same job.

Just not hot enough.

The coil your looking at is much, much hotter then the production stuff out there.

In order for the Surf Master to do the job, I will have to pull in the timing.

Wow how are you makeing ends meet?
Crevice gold, have u tryed breaking up the dirt in the crevice and using a sucker bottle to draw it out.
I didnt think the whites would be hot enough to get down to the finer gold,,,
     Thanks for the reply,,,,

I think this is very interesting!
I'd like to try making one, but i'd need a lot more specific information.
I have built probes from nail finders and I [maybe some of you remember me?] used to do all kinds of mods on Minelab Sovereigns. I was among the early group of modifyers for the Sov.
However, I know little about Pulse Induction, as our mineralization here is so low, it adversely affects a pi machine, making a multi frequency vlf a better choice.
How about some step by step directions? Just assume I know nothing from the get go-because I don't. Funny

Hi Paul,
I have never attempted to construct anything like this.
Have soldering iron etc etc.
Could you please supply more detail on how you constructed this.
Type of wire and number of turns.
I gather you use a coil lead and plug to attach it to your detector?
My machine is a Minelab GPX-4500
Either post details here or email me please.
nightjar@bigpond.net.au

Cheers
Peter

The photo is about 4 times lifesize.
It will fit in a piece of half inch plastic pipe with room to spare.
At most it weighs in at about an ounce.
I have compared it this morning with a friends "Sunray" probe ........ Mines better by far!
(His detector isn't a P.I. though)
He was well annoyed as he'd just paid about ?150 for the sunray a couple of weeks back.
 Great

NICE--i am slaying old radios now Smiley
