Does the length of the ferrite rod matter? IE: Long or short best.

Found some instructions that uses a 50mm ferrite core. After slaying an old GE super radio I got a core that is approx 150mm/6in long.  I was wondering if the longer rod would help or hurt. I have a couple more old radios that can meet their maker to donate internal organs.

Just wondering if I had already found the king of cores.

No,
Don't think it matters (Just do the windings on the end).
It's o.k. to cut it if you like, It's brittle so just go gently with a hacksaw.

I was reading on cutting those ferrite cores. Best info I found yet was to score it, then set the score mark on something like a machstick or toothpick, and gently press down on the elevated end to snap it off.

I think I'll just store the rod as-is for a future unknown project, maybe a super powerful AM receiver that I can lug around with me on digs.

Thanks for the info, heading to my parts room and find another doner. Going to rebuild the cheap Cen-Tech Handheld detector I got at Harbor Freight for $18 bucks. It was worth it for just the circuit and enclosure itself.
 Great

For Electronic Whiz-Morons like my me, is it possible to get plans (for such as me...  Huh?) to make such an item? Would it work on a Whites's M6?
Thanks for your reply.

It can be done but VLF detectors require two coils working together.

More trouble the I would spend on it.

Just use a Stand Alone Pin Pointer.

I played around with an old VLF detector to see if I could make it into a pin-pointer but the results were poor. The way that I did it was like this, I used a ferrite rod of 100mm long and wound 100 turns on it then I made a tube out of some thin cardboard that could slide over the first coil I then wound 120 turns on it by sliding the second coil up and down the first coil I managed to detect a copper coin at about 15mm. It could be that the inductance of my coils was incorrect but to cut a long story short I gave up on it as a bad idea and it now resides in the bottom of a drawer waiting for me to get a brain wave LOL. I did not use a bucking coils so that could have been the problem with it but the idea was to use the same principal as the DD coil. If you want to play around with this kind of project I can help you with a TX RX circuit but you're on your own with the coil come to think of it I may even give it a go at some or other time.

Regards
Xavier
