From Delta Pulse, adjust trimpot (200K or 220K ) to 100-120Hz for Delta Pulse, 300Hz for XR-71,...but I prepare adjusting trimpot on actual testing of some metal objects.

Remove IRF740 then try again if 556 becomes hot again remove NE556 check your supply,.Pin#7 and 14, VD8-VD9..check for possible short components, pcb tracks and last try new NE556.

I think that's the indication that your DP is working good, GREEN LED is for power on indicator, RED LED is for low battery and for meter that's normal, connect search coil  and touch the IRF740( i used IRF840 with this) if it is hot try sub. dumper diode around 1K5 down to 680 Ohms and make some testing. By the ways whats the size of your coil and how many turns?
