A neighbor of mine had some huge ones that were brown and were about 16 inches high and about 10-12 inches in dia. What in the world were these used for?

Hi Goldfinger :
Those big porcelain insulators were used for high voltage transmission lines. The higher the voltage the larger the insulator had to be.
