Dang!   Here in Deming New Mexico we had a outfit called  Peru Mines.

They Extracted GOLD from Pyrites two miles from my house.  Arsenal pyrites!

They got shut down due to introduction of Arsenic in the ground water and was fixed as a Supper Fund site just a few years Ago!

Your going to have a hard time convincing me Pyrites contain no GOLD!

As for Load GOLD?

Yes there are a few forms of Ore that show not visible gold but it abounds!

Tulluride is one and even good old Galena too.

i am from california so i know what you mean, i have found gold in places where there should not have been anything except the dumbfounded looks i got from the people watching me but i guess thats why they call it prospecting and not finding lol


whats up homefire!!! i was wondering when you were going to add your knowledge to the convo bud.

all i found in oklahoma was a bunch of fines and a good sunburn , i hope i do better in new mexico when i make it back up there.

Homefire, your tale is noted but remember that the exception does not prove the rule. I have already admitted and agree that gold CAN be found with pyrites but it is a very rare thing indeed. When a beginner here asks if pyrites contain gold and you tell him it does, you will have him chasing pyrites. Is that really what you want to accomplish? At the risk of winning a small point, would you cause a beginner to have the wrong idea? Just because some mining operation processes pyrites in YOUR area does not mean that they are ALWAYS found in pyrites.

Go read the original post. This poor guy is getting caught in the the middle of an argument that has nothing to do with his question. Please do not continue to put forward your argument here again unless you clearly specify that it is a one-of-a-kind operation and not the norm. This can truly be confusing to a novice while those of us who are experienced prospectors can have a good laugh about it around a campfire. I'm begging you here, mate. Please don't confuse the beginners with your specious arguments.

Here it is again for the record. Gold HAS been found with pyrites. I admit that to you, God and everyone else. However, it is found in or with pyrites for such a small percentage of the time that most experienced prospectors DO NOT continue in an area where Fool's Gold has been found. If you do personally, so be it. For a beginner, I advise them to look elsewhere for a better prospect of finding REAL gold.

The Mamut copper mines also produced gold, as well as devastating ecological effects. Some years ago, I stood in front of a huge pile of tailings from that mine, wondering if there was any gold worth extracting, and did a bit of research on the matter. Not being chemically inclined, I put the matter aside. Arsenopyrites are mentioned near the end of the attached article.

Arsenic is a leach agent of gold.

It only stands to reason that Mother Nature would have carried some in the process.

Acid-sulphate soils and acidic water would most certainly release the arsenic in naturally occurring arsenopyrites over time (as well as cadmium etc). The mine owners did not win any prizes for their work methods.
