Actually since we had about 20 feet of fall over 50 feet of distance the suction was pretty impressive. It's definitly a location based tool, in some locations it just wouldn't work, but the lay of the land where we tried it was perfect.

I took 4 sticks of 10' 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe cut em in half to 5 foot. Glued a pvc connector on one end of each pipe to keep it portable for hiking. On the upper end I used a 25' length of 1 1/2" flex hose like on the bucket project. Fed the bottom end into a keene 4' sluice box. Priming is a little tricky, patience and burping the line by uncorking it for short bits to get all the air out. Once it's full let it go and as long as the upper end stays under water it runs forever. I also used a crevice tool from a shop vac to classify the material to avoid clogs.

45$ total cost brand new from home depot. Could have got the crevice tool from a thrift store cheaper but I was on a time constraint Smiley

Hi Dougb,

Finally found which sd card had these pics on it. Sorry didn't take very many. Basically the dredge is just a long tube with a flex hose at the top. In the first pic the white line running diagonal across the pic is the dredge line and the angle is the actual fall we had. Thats really the kicker for these things to work you have to have sufficient fall to make the suction. This tube at 60ish feet had enough suction to pick up 2 or 3 lb rocks and hold em stuck to the hose. A 4 inch pipe at this fall would likely take your hand off. At the bottom just run it into a sluice.

The other important tool like Sean says is #2 operator   Grin. My son in the coooold water working the dredge while I sit in the shade and take pictures   Wink I had to make him hot coffee later to get his toes working again, so there ain't no free lunch hehe

I only wish it was so Sean Smiley

Not as much as I thought we were going to, but we didn't get to the bottom of the crevice. We just worked half a day and I was sure we would see a nugget or two from it but just wasnt to be. The dredge did it's part, it moved a lot of material, but my calibrated eye was malfunctioning I guess. I plan on moving up the mountain some next time, as there are some great catchpockets that I hope will yield some good stuff, as well as an old mine up above. It's a little rugged to get to and there are no roads close so its leather personel carriers all the way.

I'm a little concerned the sluice I was using, a Keene 4', might be losing some gold. I got it second hand and it's never done as good as I thought it should. One of my projects this winter is to build a 10' sluice to go with the dredge.

We got some decent color out of the crevices in camp with an air mattress pump hooked to a weed sprayer filter assembly. We were having so much fun the first night that we broke out the lantern and LED flashlights and worked till 11pm.

This was kind of a test run for heading up north to the Warren area where I've always had good luck in the past. It's about 6 hours to get there so I wanted to test it close to home first. I've always got some crazy idea to try out. Never know, today may be the day Smiley

that"s good use of a hand bildge pump.i've got a couple laying around.they"re made in several lengths of the same dia.now what i want to see is a automatic arm you crank up to run the pump.if you ever get to the coastal area check out the second hand marine store for used pumps.you can take johnson or jabsco lmpeller pump, a coupling, small gas engine and make a small light weight mini dredge.i"m working on one now, impellors swap out in minutes and you can reverse rotation.i"m recently out of hosp, care home, as soon as i recover use of hands and feet i"ll finish my mini dredge and send pictures..

Sweet. I've been watching Craigs List for a cheap jetski impeller for that. Would love to see what you come up with gimp  Smiley

the jetski impellors i"ve seen are plastic, until you get to high perf. racing design with nylon wear ring, then you need horse power and high r.p.m.for them to work.sand eats em up fast.the pump i"m playing with is a 1"cooling pump coupled to a weed eater type eng.suction hose has foot valve screen trap for prime,if it produces the volume i think it will i"ll do a jet suction.combined the eng/pump fit in 1 gallon bucket and weighs a few pounds      gimp
