riverrunner:2" is a good choice, hose and fittings more common for the types you need.1" increase on camlocks alone will double in price plus you won"t have to run engine and pump as hard,it"s your pump and engine where you"ll have most your trouble anyway(if you have good hose) i built a sluice out of wood many moons ago used it for a couple months, the last day at camp i used it for firewood,it did its job worked great! but it was ready for the fire before it ended there,it was in the plan, packed the wood in put it together onsite..didn"t get much gold but we had a blast....gimp

Thanks Gimp, I had no idea that the price doubled in just an inch size on the hose couplings. The more i think about it, i think two inch makes more since and i should be able to get great suction. What do you think about the three stage sluice? I built the three stage sluice because i really liked the idea of multiple sets of riffles as well as the classification of the smaller material to the under current. Im not against making a second set of riffles that can run the full length of the box if needed. Just curious as to what you think about the idea?

river:i"m guessing because of where your at the gold is fine,3-stage is the way to go,the purpose of 3-stage is better recovery of fine,i"m not the expert, the person I would ask..MR IDAHO JONES who is familiar with your area and the mind behind this thread(thanks IDAHO can"t whait to try my bucket sucker out) without seeing your sluice its hard to say.start a new thread and let"s get some of these great minds together, include some pictures, the more the merrier,i"d like to see your pump, eng combo...gimp

Greetings all,

Sorry I have been offline for the most part last couple months.

Riverrunner your project sounds fun, post some pics if you havent already. I agree the building part is fun. I have another project in the works myself for before the thaw.

Thanks Gimp for the good advice, love grangers. Also one might check with hot tub and pool supply places for pool vaccuum hose which is light flexible and wire reinforced. Gimp is absolutely right tho you just want only as much hose as you need, too much extra causes issues.

I believe the extra riffles would not be a bad thing. A lot of the Idaho gold has been pulverized into fines so the more time it has to catch the more you get. The big pieces take care of themselves it's the little stuff that gets away.

Hi Danny,
Fascinating part of the world you live in, I am enthralled by places like Petra and the Sumerian cities. Now thats some ancient history there! As far as finding gold you might want to research dry washers which can recover without water. Also see what places near you have historically had gold mines, a good place to look for gold is where it's been found before. Ancient riverbeds especially dry ones might be an excellent spot for you to check, dig down to bedrock and do a test pan to see if there is any color. Good hunting!

Glad this post got dredged back up as it would have taken me a while to get to it. I'm a big fan of light and portable with hand power. I plan on doing a lot of exploratory prospecting in the next 2 years and compact is what I'm looking for. I was thinking of the VacPac but I don't like the idea of the extra weight of the motor and fuel.

A big thank you to Idaho Jones for sharing this gem, I'm defiantly going to try making one of these.

One question, have you tried this out on any dry crevices or does it only work wet. Would love to figure out a dry version of this.

Miles

Thanks Cody, I'll see what I can dredge up. I'm thinking of visiting your shop sometime so maybe I'll bring the prototype by.

Miles, this one only works wet at the moment. It does do a great job in crevices. I think if I did it again I would build a suction pump like gramps' mini hoover instead of the pump I bought. The one I got is starting to wear out and losing some of the suction.

You could perhaps modify the suction pump with a hand operated vaccuum fan for dry work but at some point using a gas leaf blower might be the better option. Save the arms for panning Smiley

Be glad when I can get back up to the hills to fill mine up again Smiley

Go Up Go Down

Howdy everyone, ive been gone for a while. I hope everyone is doing well. I appreciate all the input on my dredge building. I finished it a couple of months ago but ive been waiting for the water levels to drop to a some what reasonable level. I will post pictures of the dredge i built if i can figure out how to attach them. Mean while i managed to build a pretty good high banker for under 20 dollars. It is going up to the hills tomorro for a test run.

well happy hunting everyone and good luck finding the Au
