It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Go Up Go Down

Hey all, its been awhile since ive been on line, no internet, but im back finally. I just finished building a 3 inch dredge from scratch over the last few months, i still need to find hose for it and a good place to test it so i can make any mods to it befor the snow melts  in the mountains and its time to use it. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to purchase three inch rigid hose that will work well. I have the hose for the pick up and for delivering water from pump to power jet, i only need the working hose.

riverrunner:you didn"t say what parts your from, plumbing supply houses, irrigation, sump pumps, trash pumps, all use the types that could work.marine hose, sanitation, exhaust hose.online try GRAINGER,MCMASTER-CARR both carry a good supply of hose,cam-locks,pipe fittings.i myself prefer a wire reinforced hose for suction, depending on the type of pump your using, corrugated hose can create cavitation causing premature failure of pump impellors.for discharge i use fire hose,it flattens out, rolls up for transport or stowage.i"M not sure what you mean by working hose,to me the working hose that takes the most abuse is the suction hose, the abrassiveness of sand and gravel can destroy a hose in minutes.spend the extra money for your working hose, same goes for hose clamps,i use ss t-bar clamps for marine exhaust..good luck!!..gimp55

thanks for all the info, i apologize for not putting out enough info, i am from Idaho, and by working hose i am refering to the suction hose. i was planning on using a rigid hose that was smooth on the inside for the same cavitation reasons you stated, however i was unsure on how rigid it should be. I would seem that the more flexible the hose the easier it would be to work with. I have been panning and sluicing for a few years, and just decided to try my hand at dredging this last summer, so im very new at it and dont know alot about what works best. I do appreciate the info very much.

riverrunner:well where you live irrigation is common.3" is big machine to break in on,are you using jet suction or staight?for 3" i"d do 10ft sections with cam-locks,that way you don"t have too much hose, what i mean is if you start with a 40ft section and you only need 20 your only option is to snake it around to make it work and you lose efficiancy and you create clogs,it"s also easier to carry, unclog short sections.use fpt cam-locks,3X8 brass nipples, cut nipples in half, use bench grinder to cut grooves on shoulder to make hose barb that way you maintain inside dia.i helped build a 8" for beach dredging in nome, on that one i used marine exhaust hose for weight to help keep diver down.with the 3" be careful you don"t overpower your sluice.i watched a guy in fairbanks spend a couple hours assembling his homebuilt 2" dredge, with a big smile he started up and went to work,he had rivetted his riffles and sluice sides together, didn"t last 5 minutes, aluminum, gravel everywhere i almost peed myself, don"t let it happen to you!!!..gimp

great advice gimp, i like the sections of hose idea better than one solid piece, it makes since for ease of use at shorter distances. I am gonna rethink the three inch idea and mabe drop to a 2 or 2 1/2 inc. as far as the riffles and box go, it is all made from welded steel so im pretty sure it will hold up. I do plan on testing it before i actually head for the hills tho. Just so i can make any mods to it that i think need to be made. I am currently working on a high banker attachment that will also fit the sluice on the dredge. Thanks for the great ideas, keep them comming. i enjoy building equiptment in the shop just to see if it works. Finding the yellow stuff is a bonus.
