Guys, anyone know what the record is for the longest thread is on thunting?
Just curious.......
Viking

At the moment it's the most popular topic but the one that I have found with the most postings is "Delta Pulse XR71 Pulse Induction Metal Detector" with 512 posts. However I don't think that the amount of posts is of any importance but rather the quality of the postings is what will attract more South Africans to this thread or other members that would like to come to SA or have been to SA at one time or other. To make this thread interesting should be our primary objective. I don't get out much at the moment as I'm busy getting my detector up and running but as soon as I can say that I have a viable detector I will try and post some stories about sites that I have found and some history about that site. Photos tel 1000 words and as I'm not much of a story teller I will use that medium like I have done with my projects to get my story across then just answer to the questions if there are any.

All the best to you guys keep up the good work
Regards Xavier

Xavier
Do you have any other machines that you hunt with or are you a diy man all the way.
Pictures are so much better than words, I was a little embarrassed by putting pics on  beachhunter.co.za, especially as I seem to have been having a bad hair day...lol! But it would not have been the same without the pics.
If you like you could post the pics and I'll make up the text...hehehe!
Kind regards
Viking
And then a quick all stations alert, Iv'e got a hunt coming up and need any info anyone has on Brit and Boer sites/movements in the DEWETSDORP area.
Any thing and all is welcome

Viking I can't afford to buy a good detector and I'm a firm believer that if it's not good then it's not worth buying so I build all my detector my self. I started off with the BFO to gain experience then I build a VLF but it was useless thats when I decided to design my own that was over a year ago and I'm still on it then I found the DBP2010 on the forum and it was meant to be the detector off them all but then I found that it was quite useless to me unless I did the right mods for it to run properly on a small coil I now have a machine that is almost great. I have done some testing with it today and my shielded coil seems to be doing the job so depending on the weather I will go out to the beach tomorrow to do more testing this time on sand and in the water. And I promise to take my camera with me.

Go Up Go Down

Detection depth 30 cm small coin (1 Rand in air test)
Stability
Good weight distribution
Long battery life
As little bells a whistles as posible
A vibrator in the handle (optional)
Durability must resist to a fair amount of shock
Coils must be interchangeable I must have small, medium, large settings ( in my case large would be no more than 50 cm)
Must have a pin-pointer it's hell with a large coil at times

Go Up Go Down

Hi Guys! Just got back from JHB ! I see, you are all accusing me of lack of adventure ! It is not like that - I promise ! I am still good treasure-hunter ! Just bad  planning from my side ! Generally , area is very hot and dry , I didnt secure enough drinks and food , didnt plan to stay that long , didnt do my homework , and I went alone ! ! I got that spot at the end of the day - tired , dehydrated  and with lack of enthusiasm I Wasnt even sure if I want to check that signal - digging in that  dry ,rocky ground is terrible ! But after scratching top soil I found very large, flat rock which was giving me signal !! Than I started getting interested - "hot rock" , meteorite ? After LOTS of struggle I removed that rock and rock didnt gave me signal any more ! Than I checked the hole again and - voila  - signal is back ! Got to the metal plate ! Looks like somebody cover that plate wit that big rock ? Than ideas started coming to my head - very similar to yours, Guys ! Tried to remove that bloody plate but it was still stuck with soil , rocks and roots and was very rusted so it breaks to small fragments under pressure .  Than I started getting some creepy feelings - maybe some dead things lying under it ?!  So , I had enough for the day ! Covered everything up nicely , marked the place and run away ! That my story - believe or not ! Maybe , one day , if one of you will join me ....?

Don't worry Silki.
We are all just pulling your leg. At least you know for next time, and I am sure you will be able to find it again. It could very well be nothing but and old plate. I think we are all just dying to get out there again and our imaginations tend to run away with us a little....then again it could be a cache of sorts.....you never know. It just takes 1 coil in the right place and another treasure leaves the earth!
I think we should start trying to co ordinate a hunt for next year.....any takers? Maybe a nice Boer War site that someone can get access to. I am all ears....Kalula dot com......

Good idea, Viking ! The best will be some private farm, if we can convince owner for the permission -  at least nobody would disturb  us ! I just finished book about Anglo - Zulu wars in KZN - also nice spots ! Tugela, Ulundi , Eshowe ,Mgungundlowu and more ! I dont think many people if anybody ever searched that places !

Silki
Well you've got my attention! Farms are the answer, private land where we can hunt in peace!
Do you have any connections that you could get in touch with? So far it would only be 5 or 6 of us at most...probably less though.
I think we should look at the seasons and then set a date based on the most likely chance of good weather.
By the way I don't mind camping if that is ever an issue.
Speak again
Viking!
