I repeat go to this link and see how many hoops, loops, stone walls and chasms OME had to jump
through and over with the Spaniards.  OME asked them numerous times to join in the hunt and
were rebuffed.

Pretty good read till they switched to all Spanish.
Sometimes it's easier to ask forgiveness than permission. I know, not a great lesson, but...
The lawyers were the ones REALLY getting paid? Doesn't look like OME could have done anything more.
So, how did it turn out?
Thanks,
R

Homies got it again!  Grin

These things will never end, jealousy also weighs into the equation when somebody finds something of real value such as the case of this treasure find and the Spanish government.

There is no real claim that they or any other country could have. Due diligence comes to mind, as does Maritime Admiralty law as well as abandonment law, and salvage law. This case as well as many others could be thrown out just on existing caselaw and laws that I mentioned above if read and weighed into case evidence in court.

I could give a darn about Spain being about broke, whats new?  They have been a broke country for much of there history, as many other countries have been which includes the current state of fiscal balance in the USA and across the Eu for that matter.

What about the research, hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses and man power and total cost for the salvers who found the sunken treasure?  The court or Spain could care less about rightful ownership IMO.

The trouble with treasure begins when you find it!

Cheers & I say it belongs to the salvors who rightfully worked to find it & bring it up.... Great

Jim

This must be a joke, If ANYONE is entitled to the loot, it sure would NOT be Spain. They stole it to begin with, had every opportunity to be in on the recovery. Never looked for it anyway? Better yet, who even knows how far back the treasure's ownership goes.
Odyssey should have at least recovered their costs before releasing. Sounds like possession is 9/10th of the law.....or Peru would have been heard? What happened to International waters anyway?
          This just isn't right.

I find a bunch of posts that aren't even on here, What's up with that?

They should have put it back in the ocean and told Spain to spend the money, time and research and get it themselves.

The only problem with throwing it back in the ocean, is, they didn't know they would lose until it was too late. They would become criminals for such an action.

The basis for their claim is Maritime Law dealing with Sunken War vessels. Now this law was enacted long after the ship sank.  Seems there something amiss there...

While you can claim a war vessel and its dead ar inviolate this treasure would have been free game if the ship had drifted a hulk and came upon at sea. It would simply have been spoils of war...

This deal sucks and smells of smelt...

I bet this really puts a damper on any future searches for spanish galleons, maybe even the end of searches.
