You do know that particular test is an old wive's tale, right? It's a practical joke to get people to crush their diamonds. I wonder how many beautiful specimens you have crushed over the years. Trust me. I'm not laughing.

GD I've dived diamonds for years on the west coast South Africa you can't crush a diamond by hand but you can crush it with a hammer diamonds are sensitive to shock not pressure.

It all depends on the alignment of the internal fracture lines. You can crush a diamond. Unfortunately, once you crush it, you normally toss the detritus away and you toss away the evidence at the same time. There are far better and easier tests to make. A ceramic streak test is non destructive. I'm afraid you really have been fed a wive's tale on this one. Seriously.

So.....a flawless UNCUT diamond will possibly survive the pliers test, but anything less than perfect and it gets to be dicey depending upon how the pliers and the faults and the stars line up   Undecided   


Where's my super glue?   I need to see if I can put all that "quartz" dust back together.

That's about it, BA. The diamond will either be pulverized or fracture. In either case, you damage a possible gemstone quality diamond. In the field, the commercial diamond miners use refractometry as a quick and dirty test. Diamonds have a signature refraction index. The streak test is also handy in the field because a ceramic disc can be kept in your pocket.

A clean, dry diamond can be heat tested using a small, hand held tester but field use is difficult because the samples are not always clean and dry. It only takes a very small amount of heat which is transferred through the diamond to the sensor. Knowing the mass of the diamond, the tester will give accurate results.
