Go Up Go Down

Went to a beach that contained black sand and yellow-brown rocks. Saw some glittery particles in the sand and grabbed 3 handfulls. Took the sand home, washed and panned out as much seashell bits as I could. Under a 15X loupe, I saw some translucent clear and yellow pieces which had perfect cleavage and were very small, I guess less than 0.25mm across. I dismiss the translucent particles with irregular cleavage as ordinary quartz.

Unfortunately after putting the sand under my USB microscope, those rectangular pieces couldn't be found. The attached photo is of the sand at 200X magnification. I think it's time to go shopping for a better microscope.

QUESTION: if those shiny pieces with perfect cleavage are indeed micro diamonds, does that indicate the possibility of larger diamonds in the same area?

I really doubt those were diamonds you saw. Many minerals shine and sparkle.

Thanks for the input Steve, but that doesn't really apply to my question. Anyone else care to take a stab at it?

Come on, mate. If they were not diamond bits your question is moot. His answer has everything to do with your question.

Doubtful if they were small diamonds, are if any large ones are hiding in the sand. Most if not all beaches of the world have been prospected  for diamonds gold and other valuable resources.

They could be Corundum's and other hard Garnets type stuff.

Not large enough to do Gem stuff but cool.

Hi Hobbyist

Diamond bearing gravel will have olivine shiny black and fossils should you think that the stone is a diamond place it in a large pair of pliers and apply as much pressure as you can if you can crush it, it's not a diamond if you can't it is. Hope that this answer's your question.

Regards Xavier

You need to delete that. My wife may read it and try it on her wedding ring. Just because everything in Texas is big don't mean everything is real.

I'm with Seldom......I'm keeping my wife's diamond(s) away from you AND I'm keeping her far, far, far from this topic.
