I can't get mine off, but I do lift, shake, etc to get grass, debris etc out of it before I go detecting again & sometimes while I am detecting. Never expected such a tight fit when I popped it on. Is there a trick to getting it off?

Hi Sue,

First make sure you have a coil cover! easy way to tell is by look and feel, normally a coil without cover will be very smooth and have 'NO' sticky tape holding the join.

If a cover is fitted it's base will normally be of textured finish and be fitted with Tape, being mesh type tape - colour (color) black, gray (grey) or masking tape.

hope this helps you

Regards

CS

ps to all: another way of making your own coil cover or coil housing is to make it like the manufacturer, 'Vacuum Forming', not very difficult to make your own forming machine.

google it: use this terminology

DIY Vacuum Forming

I have made a few different size formers. I make my own light weight sluices, coils, underwater POV housing and a variety of specialized molds.

hope you find this not only useful but informative

 Hi all
CS what type of material do you use to make your sluices? I have been thinking to make a light weight sluice for a while now and have a couple of ideas.
My cover seems to be stuck tight, should I remove it?  Cool

Understand what you are saying - it's a cover - I bought it after I had the detector a month or so. Just fits so durn tight that I thought I might damage the coil trying to fight it off. I think it's a good idea to use one. Sue

Hi mate,

I've made a few prototypes in timber with marine ply base, welded angle iron frame for separator and used ribbed rubber floor mat and meshed gutter guard. then i slip mounted it on a butchers plastic square tub. Inside the tub i have a 12volt bilge pump coupled to a pvc pipe flow head.

The new prototype, i'm designing a vacuum former and jigs, the sluice body i was thinking of making it out of 2mm plastic and liquid foam fill, I'm aiming for the 10kg weight range. My Timber version weighs around 27 Kg.

if your interested in the VF plastics - search for H.I.P.S, theirs a company in Sydney ( it took me awhile to figure out the correct name of the plastic sheets )

Trade Name - High Impact Polystyrene

regards

Sue just get some 100 grit sand paper and lightly sand the upper inside of the innermost of the cover and see how it comes off. If still having a hard time touch light on the outer edges. This ain't rocket science, just the easiest way to make what you have work. :Smiley

As already mentioned, coil covers are a 100% necessity.

When I get a detector (which is usually always new) the first thing that I do is silicone on my coil cover.

Silicone is cheap,clear and waterproof.

Fill the coil cover with clear silicone and push the coil into it evenly and  firmly.Evenly spread the overflow all over the top.

I seal all the way over the top.

Nothing gets in/between the coil and the coil cover and your original coil is always BRAND NEW.

Note:Minelab users

Make sure that there is NO air between the coil and the coil cover when sealing because Minelabs HATE air in between the coil and the coil cover.

Another reason for false signal for users that don't clean in between the coil and coil cover after each use.

Another reason to have a perminate seal, especially when using a Minelab.

Also, silicone is very tough but very easy and clean to replace if needed.

It just peels right off with no residue.

Wow,that's crazy with that kind of investment. You got really lucky.

Another good thing about a using a coil cover is that when you go to sell or trade up your detector, you can have it off and show how well you took care of your detector.

That's another reason I like using the silicone.

i always figure its like a time bomb waiting to go off, just a matter of time, all it takes is one wrong swing and boom there goes yer coil.i guess its pretty much up to the individual but most diggers are money consous,i would gladly pay $7 bucks insurance on a $150 buck coil.it would definatly ruin my summer if i cracked that guy
