For those of you that dig it all I have to wonder if you all have a day job or are you all retired...
I agree that if you want to find the gold you should probably dig it all but with work and all the
other life issues I can not spend my time digging it all..As I have to date found 2 rings in the last
10 plus years..Not really worth my time to dig it all..I am sure as I get a little older and life starts to slow a bit
I will start to dig a little more than I do now but for now if its not what I think is a coin I move on.

Well some of us are retired some are of us have full time jobs and some of us make a living treasure hunting its a mixed bag of folks here who all share the opinion that to find the good stuff you need to dig it all. There are many reasons to do it here are a couple.
In a park school yard etc buy digging it all you clean out the junk and the next time hunt the same area you will pick up deeper finds. Plus you are getting rid of junk that could hurt someone.
Awhile back I saw where someone had been working the water line along the beach, as an experiment I worked over where they had hunted. By running wide open digging it all I got 1 small 10k ring a 5 in piece of gold chain 22 nickles and 2 pennies, Yes they got the quarters and some pennies but by digging it all and going slow I got the gold.

I guess we all have to hunt to and within our alotted time we have in the field.I envy those of you that
do it for a living and are retired. One day I hope to have more time were I can spend more time in the field but
for now I have to make the best of my time when I get out and yes I am sure I miss some gold but I still
get my TH fix by finding coins.I am sure the day will come when I will be eating my words but for now
I do what I have to to get out and get my TH fix.

Not finding fault with your choice, Dirt Devil, because you're entitled to it and it works for you----you enjoy the hobby and that's what really matters.
I made the opposite choice even though, like you, I am employed full time by someone who expects me to put in a solid 40-48/week (minimum) with a 45 minute commute each direction.
One of the reasons I made the choice I did is that it is actually harder to unlearn bad habits than it is to learn a good habit (ergo, when I do retire I'll already be in the habit of digging everything and won't find myself constantly forgetting to do so).
Another reason why I dig everything, though, is WHERE I hunt.   I don't generally do parks and tot lots (I should, I'd get out with the detector more often).   The areas I hunt have a high relic to coin ratio, so I'm looking for buttons, badges, pins, etc as well as jewelry and coins  (not to mention the possibility of the odd nugget in some of the areas).   Therefore, it is in my best interest to dig everything....even if I wind up with a huge nail and pull-tab collection.   A lot of the tokens that come out of the area read in the junk range----same thing with military insignia.

The first time you find what you think is a pull tab and you dig it anyway because your board, and it turns out to be a gold ring....you will start to digg everything.. trust me!

We are a species that want to know!
