Can you try to measure between IC4 (this time not IC5) pin6 and 0V? First make a measurment, then try turning VR1 and check if it is changing at all?

Anyway, some audio while switch on (only for a fractin of a second) can be a sign of the proper work of IC5 integrator. You have audio output for a short time, till it balances out.

OK, I took measurement at pin 6 of IC4 and it is +0.5V, when I adjust VR1 the voltage can go up or down. The instructions say to adjust VR1 so that the Output at pin 6 of IC4 is +0.5V, then if you move the coil to a peice metal it should rise to +0.7V. This does not happen , it stays the same +0.5V.

Let's check if the coil is operating at all.
What you can do without an oscilloscope, is to find a magnetic (iron) plate -the bigger and thinner is the better- and put it close to the coil. My PI (not a Sandbanks) makes even a CD drive to hum. If you hear a hum, then possibly the coil is transmitting ok.
This is not a 100% method, so if there is no hum, it can still be ok.

Now i've got to go for today.

Hey, you didn't tell yet that you have a laptop oscilloscope! Smiley
Well, usually their sampling rate is a bit too low for these 30-100 microsecond signals, but it might worth a try - though success is not guaranteed.

Do not check the coil directly with that, it has very high voltage pulses, can kill the scope without proper attenuation.

Check the signals: between ground (0V) and IC4 pin2, between ground and IC4 pin6, between ground and IC5 pin2, between ground and IC5 pin6 and between ground and IC7 pin 10.

And hope that the scope can catch those signals.

I tried and placed a 25lb. iron plate under the coil and I don't hear anything from the detector.
Gonna try and do those checks with the scope, I'll get back with the results.

Ok, anyway, forget the iron plate thing, it should have been big (size of a plam) but THIN, to be able to resonate Smiley

Go for the scope.

Hi guys

Sorry that I could not be here for the past few days but I had a lot to do.
Aliman the problem is right in front of you, you just have not spotted it yet that?s all and the audio that you get on start up sounds quite normal I do however think that you still have a problem in and around the coil take your time and re-check everything that has to do with the coil it sounds like a very small problem I?m sure that you will crack it and when you do you will kick your self for not having seen it any sooner.

Regards Xavier

When you turn VR2 no audio change neither?
If not, a stone-age trick: try to link +9V rail and IC5 pin 2 with your fingers -not with metal- (thumb and pointer, maybe try slightly wetting them) - does it move the audio?
