Aliman, I realize you were asking Xavier the question. When checking diodes it is good to desolder one end. You want to check them on diode function of the meter. You want at least a 10 to 1 ratio. Example say 500 on forward biased reading and infinity on reverse biased reading. some diodes will read some reading in reversed bias direction. Negative (black) lead on the cathode, banded end and plus (red) lead on the anode unbanded end. Hope I didn't make anyone mad with that input. Will give simple intro to transistors if anyone wants them.

Bill

All help is welcome, thanks. Those are the exact readings I got, 512 one and infinity the other way, DVM set on Diode.

Then they are good. Check for open filter capacitors by using ohmmeter and switching leads to see if the cap charges and discharges. I'm assuming you have a transistor heating up when unit is turned on for a short time!

Just a Note:

The kits I bought came with 22 SWG wire and I used 20 turns around a 200mm form and worked most well.

The article calls for 26 SWG , 20 turns on 200mm form.

 Wise

I did not have these problems with the Drive Transistor heating up.

Homefire, thats exactly the way  I made my coil 22 awg,  20 turns on 200mm diameter, but I used wire from an old transformer I had, so the wire may not be OK.
Gotta get some New 26 awg  and build it the way the documentation Cornelius sent with it, indicate.
I'm going to check those Caps to.

Hey guys, I finally got my parts and I first replaced TIP31C and IC1 and........It's WORKING !!
Yesiree bob, VR2 set to midway, adjust VR1 so the output of IC4 is 0V and BAM ! it works.

Now when I turn the power on, no more voltage drop of 2.5V, none.  Plug the coil in and a voltage drop of .5V, nice clicking sound , no more ramping upwards and TIP31A is not getting hot at all.
When I pass metal under the coil the sound changes.

Thanks Cornelius, Xavier, Homefire and everyone else who helped. I have learned an awful lot through this whole process, and am reading a book called "Starting Electronics", hopfuly that gives me a good base.

Kewl lil metal detecting icon! I liked the how to clean coins. Does it work for nickels as well? Gonna try it soon as the weather gets a little better here in Bama.
