Bitburg, What you say is true and that is what makes us here in the U.S. so jumpy  Round About we have seen it before. The real question is who without a job or income will be able to aford a detector Chinese or U.S. Huh? I worked in the eletronics industry from 1972-1992 and saw the manufacturing part of it decline as our technology was exported. I'm amazed by these little nitch manufactures like Garrett  Clapp that are still making it on consumer loyalty, quality, service and government contracts. gambol.

Ridgerunner, I won't do business with a company that doesn't have customer service. I won't buy a printer or computer if I know customer service comes from peking. That kind of service is like no service. Unfortunately in todays throw away economy, people just pitch it in the trash when it stops working. Manufactures depend on this. If they had to provide service they would be in trouble. gambol.  Rider

Would you believe I get better "service" from the moderators on this board than I got from HP when my printer was 2 weeks old? gambol

"Are they really as good as the real ones?  The Chinese have an enormous reputation for making low quality knock-offs.  Are they as durable and as long lasting as the real ones?" is EXACTLY the same thing that was being said about Japanese products from shortly after the 2nd World War until about the early 1970's.

BA, I wasn't meaning to cast doubt on the Chinese products, I really wanted to know the answers to the question.   If they are making quality products, more power to them and let the marketplace decide.  As far as Japanese products from the 1950's and early 60's, they had the reputation of being sub-standard then because they were.  But they learned and produced better quaility items beginning in the '70's and the market proved their products worth!  But I will stick with the American manufacturers of detectors!
Nice "can of worms," by the way. Clapp

ArfieBoy, I wasn't doubting your personal sincerity in asking the question...just pointing out the similarities between manufacturing history/reputation of the two countries both as a warning and also as a reminder that the rap against the Japanese products actually continued for a while beyond the point where the had caught up with the originators (in fact if it hadn't been for them (i.e. Sony especially) leaping ahead of the rest of the world so often in the 70's they would have had that rap for even longer due to nationalistic prejudices).

And like you I plan to stick to American manufacturers of detectors for the time being (unless, of course, I can manage to fit a minelab into the budget)

And good points they are BA!  It's a good lesson we all should consider, because of those same nationalistic prejudices you mention.
Like you, I definitely would consider a Minelab but I don't think the budget is ever going to allow that!  Besides, I really would rather buy parts for my Harley!

ArfieBoy How about the Minelab clone? you wont need too many chips for that.

For the price and based on some of the feedback I'm kinda tempted to try one of these Chinese machines.

Yes, I understand the temptation.  As a learning project it would be interesting to see just how they operate and handle.  But for now, I'm very happy with my old analog detectors.  I'm used to them and familiar with them.  I have learned to know what they are telling me and I continue to find a lot of good stuff with them.  I have been considering checking into some of the new light-weight detectors like Teknetics, Tesoro, etc. but haven't decided to go that path yet.  Cool

Hello Everyone . Be very careful before purchasing a so-called Minelab or Whites made in China.

I read on another forum that the performance of an expensive Minelab clone was not good !!

Two things you wonder about:

1. If a Metal Detector company from the USA or Australia decides to build all their products in China , what protection do they have of being copied/cloned again and sold in a different looking housing [control box] by another Chinese company .

2. If all the parts are an identical match on the circuit board and the search coil specs are identical and the performance is still bad then the locked embedded software is not a 100% identical match .

You can see on this link what the Chinese are advertising , I think they are desperate for business due to the bad world economy !!

BA, I've been looking for a open-can-of-worms gif for a while now. I had never seen one but I knew there must be one out there. You see great minds think alike. Any chance you can add that to the smilies for this board? gambol
