They still will not go as deep as a pulse detector with a 1x1 head on it.Been cache hunting 41 yrs and some things work and some don't.jmho.

ehat testing did you do to find this out, I knew pulse machines were deep but I did'nt know it was that deep
as these 808 type machines have been tested to the depths quoted, Thanks

If u get in hot ground the vlf 2-boxes start to fail some, another words won't go as deep as in neutral ground, that being said the pulse machines shine a little bit better in hot ground the one good thing with the 808 whites is they won't see small stuff smaller than a pop can sometimes if u are after coins etc all busted up in the ground if bunched up (in a jar) then the 808 will see them maybe.Been digging caches for some time here in the midwest usa and drought and hot mineralized ground have an effect on 2-box units. and if u have a GOOD pulse detector it will punch down thru the ground better. I really dont know which pulse is best as most are outragiously high to start with and only 3-4 really do the job. There's no sense that pulse detector should be that high. jmho.If I had knoledge of how to make a pulse I would. but working in a diesel shop for 30 yrs and keeping up with that part of life i never thought i would need to know pegboards but things (cost) have given rise to looking into the home made pulses

Thanks Shortribs, on machines like the 808, how do the two loops connect to the control boxes electronics
because when I looked at the manual it does not show you or make refferance to it, It just shows the box with a hole in each end

thanks

In each end of the detector box there is a hole that the wire heads slip into.they just have a tip that touches into the box shaft to make contact thats all and it has the 2 buttons that keep the wire heads snapped to the body shaft on each end. Looks a little feeble but its been working like that for all these years on all their 2 box models so must work out ok. The Fisher 2-box has a pole but they are tr type and are cantaklerous to use as u have to keep the boxes stable and not weegle them or they go nuts like the old tr type detectors were unstable. My feelings are the TM 900 is the best but u can get a used whites easier than a tm 900. and both have about the same depth. as remember Discovery made both for whites and themselves for a long time. so both are about alike.

RR some of the models of the 808 have a 4 pack of c cell batteries (6volt)some models had the 6 pack of aa batteries(9volt) and  u could use a 9 volt battery in an emergency Mine is about 3 yrs old and has the 4 pack of c cells. dont think one is any better than the other but don't know.Ive not used mine much as use to be a dealer for 20 yrs and when I gave it up I bought one as some people would call me to have me find their septic tanks etc. I've used 4 kinds of pulses and the whites is the most stable but is a hand held unit but u could strap it on your belt loop or chest mount it as the pulses are powerful and u cant have anything in your pockets etc or steel toed shoes on.

RR  If u go to a whites dealer  take a look at the TDI SL comming out in a few days my dist said he would have them in next week(usa) they will be 1250$ US and the TDI pros is 1800$ list so u could save 500$ with a new one and get u a 1x1 head built, that would be a killer.and if u coin hunt etc or relic hunt u can use the disc on it or use it without disc and just do tones (2) JUST A THOUGHT however u could pick u up a used pulse somewheres for a few hundred.A good thing is all the older heads off minelab pulses will fit the TDI. A pulse head isn't that hard to build as the bigger the head the easier itis to make. Its just one strand of a certain size of coax.someone can build u one for a small fee.take care

JJ U might get a used TDI at the dealer as the pro weights in at 5lb 4oz i believe and the new one weighs in at 3.2 lbs. quite a bit difference in weight.

With reference to reply #41, Shortribs is absolutely right. High mineralization areas will drive my Discovery TF900 nuts.

In the most extreme areas, the autotune function is of not much use and repeated ground balancing every meter or so don't help much. Get thee a decent PI machine and you'll be much happier!
