My understanding is that the laws on found items differ from state to state and county to county.  In many places, the item is returned to the finder if unclaimed after 60-90 days.  In other places, it is just as you've experienced.  It becomes impounded and police property to be auctioned off if not claimed.  I'm afraid, my honest friend, that it is true that "no good deed goes unpunished." I found a beautiful engagement ring valued around $4 - 5,000 by our local jewelers.  I wanted to see if it had been reported lost so I called my local police - who promptly came over and took it.  They said if it was unclaimed, it would become police property.  Is this true???  I asked if I had to give it to them, and they said I would be in possession of lost or stolen property and that was against the law.  Just trying to find out what my rights were - I really would like to see it reunited with it's owner - but if not, I would LOVE to keep it myself!  THANKS!!!

Find some legal advice, and did you get a receipt?

Some places have phone-in advice lines and if it only cost $10 for the advice, it might be cheap.

If it was not legal and you have witnesses, that cop could be in serious trouble, theft, unlawful seizure, misuse of authority, a few more.

It NEVER becomes police property, if unclaimed.... you can claim it.

This just happened recently: two kids found a $30,000 diamond ring and turned it in to the police. The police said if its not claimed within one week, it is returned to the finder. The cops made an effort to find the owner by placing an ad in the paper and online. After 90 days, it was returned to the kids. This happened in California. The laws may be different where you live.

We recently had 3 young boys find $42,000 cash in a duffle bag in a church parking lot (uh, gee, drug money?).  They turned it in to the police, but when the owners (ie; drug dealers) didn't claim it, the kids got the cash back and got to split it.  But I don't think that's the rule everywhere.

Maybe he was so ticked off, he marched back to the police station, went postal, got incarcerated, attempted an escape, instigated a prison riot, and is now held at Supermax.

Or I could be mistaken. Crazy

that was a crooked cop, if no one claims it within s many days it's yours. At least that's what I'm aware of about the law.

There are good cops & bad cops, doctors, lawyers, cooks, cabbies, everyone of them is human and you  know what that means. Should have kept the ring and put a note in the local newspaper "Lost & Found". Then demand a detailed and complete description or sales receipt to recover item. Sorry about the loss. If it was worth that much, maybe contact a lawyer.
