old old old thread but good points here. 1st) no way i'm turning that ring into the cops or anything else i find(unless it looks to be part of an investigation, guns and such) he should have gotten that ring back.  2nd) hate to disagree with DFX-GREGG but there good cops and  ALOT of bad(just look at our ex-Gov Blago),this is the city that built the machine thanks to the great late Mayor Daley and i believe in some cases ya might get it back but just as equal chance or better you won't................just cause ya try to do the right thing dosen't mean you'll benefit from it,no good deed goes unpunished.........loose lips loose rings.............and i've lived in chi-town my whole life and love it for all the good and bad

In the UK we take it in to the police station, (get it photographed first) and we get a receipt and it goes into lost property. If it's not claimed within 3 months, the item is yours to re-claim and keep. I know it's not much consolation to you now, but in the future (if it ever happens again of course) be more courteous, it seems to me the officer concerned was acting rather suspiciously? If I were you I would go to the police to see if it has been handed in?

That's like asking who lost the $100.00 bill in the library!

Who ever is asked is going to say it's thiers.

If it is or was inscribed , I would seek the owner.

Other wise in the pot it goes!

i would like to know what state this happened in out of curiosity. sounds like an anal officer to me. he certainly didn't need to act that way.

i myself would have looked in lost and found in the paper and the local craigslist lost and found section. if nothing then maybe the engraving if any inside might help. if nothing at that point i would keep it.

but as you see here is a perfect example of how we as treasure hunters have got a bad rap, but when we turn around and do what we feel is right,  we get reamed. Thumbs Down

A friend of mine ( no name ) once told me the best thing to do is give a similar description of the ring in the paper stating lost ring ( or wherever ) he figures a year for everyone inch it is deep, if someone call with the exact description then you know it is their ring. But everyone I talk to says if it is not on top of the ground and is inches in the ground it is finders keepers. I never call the police as they always confiscate everything Grin

That seemed the right thing to do but now you see what happened. I believe that every attempt should be made to return lost items but one can only go so far. If theres a name in the ring do your best to find the person. There are websites for lost and found Class rings. You found something different though. No names inscribed so what is one to do. Finders Keepers? If you found a cache of gold coins on a old homesite would you call the police or the media if so you are asking for trouble. Here comes everyone including the IRS to lay claim on YOUR treasure. Of course have permission to look there and maybe a contract but they are only so good too. Loose Lips Sink Ships and there are plenty more sayings also that say keep your mouth shut and enjoy your finds. Maybe some dont agree but I bet most do

Give me that cop's name...I'll call him and get that ring back.  Oh wait, this thread was started years ago.  HAHA  I wish he'd come back and tell us what happened.
