You also have to figure in vibration if the park, school yard is close to a highway are even a heavily traveled road the ground does vibrate we can't feel it but with the right equipment we could see it.

Maybe what a person should do is to lay a few coins down and watch what happens over a couple of Months.... would be a great experiment...

Umm, I will have to look into this with some experimentation.... I will get my thinking cap on and see how the best way to do this.... I will have to simulate rain, wind, vibration and probably others..... Let me think on it, as a movie would be great to do  Great Thanks guys, that is what these forums are great for  Wink

Ok guys, here goes.....  Grin I have gotten a container and placed holes in the bottom for water drainage..... Placed soil into and a coin on top, and placed it outside where wind, rain, vibrations and sun etc can get to it  Wise I know this is not perfect conditions, but hey lets see if the experiment works, and how long  Clapp

{alt}

Let me know if anyone has any ideas to better the experiment...... I will post on going photos as I go..... Will try weekly :-)

Shootin4Coal, thanks... it is very basic, and maybe do mre advanced for the future.... Maybe get some grass seeds and plant them and see what grass does....

Homefire, noted  Grin The container is in the elements i.e. wind, sun, dew, rain, frost etc.... In fact there is rain forecast for most of the week, so we should get some response within a week or so  Idea I would like to get a few containers with different scenarios... like sand, wet ground, Hard ground, and grass  etc Rider This first container is just to get something on the go.....

you should get some "sinkage" out of that one just based on the size of some of the dirt clods vs the size of the coin---for a couple of reasons:  having "particles" of different sizes and shapes is conducive to uneven settling which in turn is conducive to the coin slipping at an angle as it "rides"smaller particles under larger particles (as the smaller particles seek to fill the voids between the larger particles).    A more uniform and compact soil sample should result in less actual sinkage (as opposed to coverage due to other variables).

I threw 15 bucks in change out right before x-mas in my grandsons yard. (with-out him knowing) Gave him a Tesoro Compadre for his 1st detector. Hes 6. We went out the other day after rains and all the snow we had. 3 months and we had to scratch at the surface to find some of them mostly under dead grass and leafs. They were'nt just laying out to see.
