Hi Steveo, thanks for the update on you coins.....  Great I also think things will start moving when the grass grows and needs to be cut etc....  Shocked I was also thinking about grass being cut.... funny we do not find coins all cut up by a mower  Idea especially you guys who find coins in the parks..... How did those coins get buried without being bitten by the mower?Huh? more questions than answer at this time  Grin  Funny  Cheesy

Keep us informed if you can when something happens on your side.....

  Hello Peter
IS the coin that was placed straight up going deeper? I was just taking a look and thinking that could be
happening. Makes sense  with gravity and weight  added to the mix, don't forget about that. Probably the main influences when you think about it   Cool

  Hello goldnboy from upstate NY
Yep it does look as if the coin straight up will sink faster. As you said,it makes sense ,and it does  ;)Nothing gets by gravity......
I'm doing the same thing in my back yard with two quarters and having about the same results as Peter.
New grass growth is going to be a big factor in the movement of the coins also. Some ground mole activity near the area my also get close enough to affect the coins.

Yea Stevo it makes sense, its the least path of resistance, and its got the maximum gravity going for it. Will also give a funny signal with a detector, I know I've had a few.  As I'm sure others have   Cool

Hi Goldnboy,

The coins I placed have not moved either way yet, all that has happened is that the ground has settled around them somewhat. I would also think that the coin on it's edge will sink quicker, again, we will see if that happens.... The place where I planted my coins will one day be burnt with bush fire, but it will be interesting to see if that changes anything,,,, that is besides burning the coins  Grin

I guess this experiment is going to take some time to show good results, although in a park I do not see how that happens with all the people walking about and the grass getting cut. All I can think is that with people walking on top of a dropped coin, that could help the coin to sink quicker.

Peter, barring a major dust storm, flood, earthquake, or something similar this is going to be a very slow experiment.....when it comes to normal day to day changes we're talking additions and subtractions relative to the surroundings that we can't measure or see with the equipment available to us (much like watching grass grow, but slower).

Very true, BA. The movement of coins and relics in the earth is entirely due to animal movements at all levels from bacterial to mammal. Moles, worms and even plant growth will move the coin around. Gravity has only one function here and that's to keep the coin from flying off into orbit when it is first dropped. The effect of gravity on a coin as far as making it go into the soil is over once it hits the ground.

BA, GoldDigger1950, you guys are 100% correct.. this is going to take a fair amount of time  Coffee I am thinking maybe a couple of years if the coins do not get stolen first.... The only thing I am thinking is that I have dug up coins that are newish, so it means that they sank quickly.... If I can replicate the coin being covered by dust till I cannot see it, then I will be happy, as I think it may not be so much as sinking but as new ground covering the coin that is making it look like it has sunk... But that we will have to see what is happening.....  Wise Thanks for the input guys, it is appreciated very much.

I suggest that your experiment is due to fail and yield skewed results because once it goes below the surface, you have to probe down to touch it and in doing so, bury it deeper still. In effect, you become the motive power behind the coin's penetration to some degree.

Perhaps it's better just to ponder.
