Hey Viking,

Great to have you with us on this topic  Grin It is amazing how many new inventions came from boredom  Wise

I believe you are right in what you say..... it is a combination of size, weight, shape and what type of ground and weather conditions.... I do not think my coins are going to sink... (funny feeling) on this one..... but lets see what happens  Kiss

After some research and pondering I believe that this experiment will have to go on for a long time. Somehow I don't think I'm going to see much sinkage in a short amount of time in the compact loam soil of my plot.I have fenced off a 1'square section at the edge of my yard, this is undisturbed soil with grass and anything else that grows there.I placed 2 clad quarters, one flat and one on edge in the grass, just as if someone dropped and lost them there.
Short of actually losing the 2 coins myself I feel that this is as close to a real scenario as I can get,at least in my yard. Grin
If I have to wait 30 years to see a result then so be it.Not like it"s taking up any of my time.Mother nature has all the time in the world to work on these coins for me.  Wink
With all the mole activity this year maybe one of these critters will speed up the process. Crazy

If anything happens earlier I will post it,if not then I'll just wait it out no matter how long it takes.... Great

Hey Karl  Waveing
Myself,I have no plans on a time limit for this experiment. The coin are just laying around and I'm a very patient person,so I'm in no rush.I will do checks on them every now & then and mow over then a few times a year during season.
GOD willing I have all the time in the world for this since it really is not costing me actual time.... Great
Them two quarters do not belong to me anymore, they are the property of mother earth and mother nature. As far as I'm concerned they can stay there till the end of time....

Pgill, I was at the beach in New Port Richy Florida yesterday and  I started my little experiment. I tossed out 10 pennys dated 1960-1969. These are all copper coins and should last a while. I also tossed out a 1966 quarter and a 1968 dime. clad coins.
While I was there I found a 1957 "wheat" penny 2 inches under the surface by the roots of a palm tree. 1957 pennys are fairly rare here now and I was suprised it was right under the surface. I think one of three things are possible. 1) it was just an old coin that was lost recently. 2) The soil was brought in recently from another location (fill). or 3) The coin was brought to the surface by wind erosion.

On top of the ground in this location there were numerous small qtz, feldspar pebbles. This is not unusual but when you see it, it indicates wind erosion. There are few pebbles in the beach sand here and when you see them on top it is because the wind blew the sand away and left the heavier pebbles behind. You see this in the desert a lot as desert "pavement".  I got to looking at the palm trees and there was evidence on the trunk that the ground was about a foot higher at one time. Rings of dead roots are still clinging to the trunks of the palm trees on this beach. I'm going with option 3 at this point. In view of my later observations it ocurred to me that wind may determine how fast the coins sink in this situation. It could be very rapid or not at all.

Okay now who is going to sacrifice a gold ring?
Hey Pgill you started this little experiment, you might as well go the whole way!

Ok very interesting topic indeed.here are some thoughts I had.I hunt for arrowheads and in the winter time I have been to places where there were chips and flakes everywhere, but with the freezing and thawing all the time the top layer turns to mush and the chips sink and most disapear. Also thought that those big cracks in the ground in the summertime might explain some of it.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for no reply, but Internet was down again for the 5th time this year  No no!

Ok, I will post a photo tomorrow of what has happened after a week..... It is very interesting as we have had lots of rain.... The flat coin has settled some, and has little specks of dirt on the face,,,, oh and already starting to rust... stupid SA coins  Funny The coin on it's side has a different effect... basically more coin is now showing as the soil has settled some, but against the one side, there is some build up of soil  Great

What I am thinking more on though, is that the coins do not really sink that much, but get covered from a build-up on top of the ground due to wind blowing soil around and grass.... Grass traps the blown soil, so it just adds to the level on the ground, and seeing as the grass grows, we do not see this new level. Just some of my guesses.....

How long am I going to carry on this project? I am not in a hurry, so no time allocated for this project.... Just keep your eyes on it  Shocked

Viking, I think a gold ring will sink quicker than a coin, so when I recieve your in the post I will plant it for you  Grin  Idea.

Ok, now I am confused...  :Smiley

Went out to photograph the coins tonight and found the coins both in one corner of the container.... The soil is very wet from the rain, but there are scratches in the soil....  Idiot Don't know if birds have done this, or the rain attacked the container.....

{alt}

Well if you have any ideas, let me know.....
