Pgill, it's a bit risky, but what type of access do you have to that patch of land you shot the search technique video on?   If you took a couple of low value coins (possibly foreign to your area) and placed a couple there and gps'ed the exact spot and then basically checked them once a week (noting weather conditions for the previous week) that would be a legitimate full scale test.  You could even have a "permament" measuring post in the general area that you could use to tell how much the soil level had built up (or possibly been worn away if you had part of the starting scale under ground).

Just a thought

BA

BA, thanks for that idea.... it is brilliant  Great I could even plant the coins at my work place  Wise I will look into this tomorrow... The ruler idea is also great....  Pray sometimes a person just needs new ideas... I will keep you all posted.

Viking, I agree with you.... the fact is I did not write it.... I am still puzzled on this one, but what I think is that someone wrote it and then deleted the message again.... I quoted the message before it dissapeared  Idiot

PLEASE do not forget to post my gold coins back to me....   Wise you know what I am talking about  Shocked I am watching you....

Hi here in the Hoosier state freezing and thawing have an impact i noticed in some cold frozen ground diggin i done that some items seem to move up a little at times  and sink at times  wierd  i have built fence with old farmers that referenced the alminac they said at certain times of the year you can dig a post hole  fill it with a post and still get every bit of dirt back in ? have no idea about the science of it  but i have done and other times i had dirt left over so there must be somthin to it ? the moon effects the tides so it may have a little effect on soft thawed or moist ground ? that was a very good question Thanks for asking i  wish i had a better answer for ya  Happy diggin!  Smiley  JOSEY

Hi Josey,

Thanks for joining us in this topic, you make some good points about the amount of soil in a hole....I have also noticed similar things happening. I spoke to a farmer that was going around each week to check his fence, he was telling me that the iron poles at times would come loose for no reason.... I think this is the same thing we are working with.

I think the different elements do different things to different items..... I have seen a 1990's coin about 6" down, and an older coin from the 1800's only 4" down.... now that is strange....

But anyway, we are going to carry on with this test, and see what happens....  Great

Yep the older farmers thought it not wise to plant fence post during a full moon. They claim that it will loosen the post in the hole.... Undecided
At least that's what they say... Could be an old wives tale.

I think also a piece of ground that holds water when it rains will cause items to sink more  :Smiley Umm looks like there are lots of factors involved...  Wise not as easy as I thought.....
