leave them...birds and other critters are a legitimate cause for coins "sinking"....although I still hold that the grass trapping blowing soil and then growing over it (or some similar means of soil build up) accounts for most of the apparent sinkage.

Yeah, and you go to other locations and find 70 year old coins laying either on top of the ground or literally just beneath the surface (less than 2 inches).  Just this past weekend, one of my partners dug up a late 1700's early 1800's Spanish silver coin (dating to shortly before the Mexican Revolution) buried about 3 inches below the surface in southern Arizona.    It was extremely well worn, but still it had probably been buried for at least 150 to 200 years.
