A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

You're forgiven mate and you could not know what the outcome would be. I don't think that I agree with the way that this project is being handled, the problem that I have with it is that the pin pointer should have been build the way that it was proposed then after testing the mods could have been done to it, not the other way round, thing is that if it dose not work you will not know where to look for the fault, had you build the original first and it was not working you had a good starting point and had it worked you could have done all the mods with a reference point (the original) so I'm going to build the original one but I can't do it right now as I first need to get the PIC and the 0.3mm mag wire.

Assuming Carl programed the chip as per Original, I'm building the original with exeption of the LM317.  I too will use the LM7805L.   I have a few and like them.

Yes, with one exception, I turned code protection off, so that the chip can be reprogrammed if software code is wrong.

Xavier. I am gong to have to fudge on one more thing. That .3 mm wire translates to 28.5 AWG. Almost impossible to find half sizes in US. Outlets like to carry only standard sizes because of inventory concerns. 24 AWG is the closest I can find. Should work ok as long as I keep inductance the same.

I'm concerned with the 5v apposed to the 3.3v on the schematic, there has to be a reason why he used that voltage.

All I  can see is longer battery life. No one knows who original author was.
