Jim, I seem to remember that Lukas had spoken to a farmer on the farm that borders the main site and got permission from him on his land.... maybe wrong  Idea
Xavier, you need a sense of adventure  Grin when you are having fun, that distance is not bad  No no! What is it with the grave on the farm? I think we need to search more of that farm, I think there could be some great stuff there  Great or have you taken it already??? We should look at the other Boer war site near the farm that you were talking about...... When you coming back.... we need to get out again  Hello  Laola

Hi all, I was reading some of the post's I think Peter was keen on quad bikes. How about two wheels, you can get thruogh tighter spots... These quads roll over sometimes with not very nice results!!

viking, This thread has covered a lot of ground but I want to say MD as a hobby is threatened here in the states by mantra of resource protection on one hand and history preservation on the other.. I sent my kids off to college only to have them come back and call me a "pot holer" (one who digs indian mounds illegealy and leaves open holes behind.) I've collected arrowheads all my life and never dug for them once.  If you read Jaketta Hawks book about the histroy of Archeology the early archeologist in  Egypt and the middle east were about the same as a pot holer. In fact she says that the current practices of professional archiologist will be viewed by future ones way we now view the earlier ones. The fact is anyone that digs disturbs the situation. That being said, neither MD hobbiest or Archeologist are the real threat to our underground history. Bulldozing and pouring concrete or asphalt are the real culprits. You should feel good about getting in and doing your MD before the concrete is poured. I would like to see a time when MD hobbiest could be permitted by the state to do just that.

Hello Gambol1, You have made some good points. I don't know of the book that you refer to but it sounds about right.

Umm Xavier (maybe grave robber) have you cleared that ground yet  Shocked  Shame

goldnboy, you have insight my man.... Xavier has his eyes closed  Grin Quads are great for the climbing up that mountain (Spionkop) better than walking..... Jim said he was buggered by the time he got to the top..... so why not quad to the top  Coffee

Gambol1, We are a mixed up bunch here, but we do have great fun..... when we cannot get out detecting, or only find pulltabs, then we talk rubbish  Laughing
I agree with what you are saying..... they should make it mandatory that they get a detector guy / gal to come in and check the area before putting concrete, that way we can get some good sites, and all the treasure that are buried under concrete will be saved...... Umm if only the authorities would listen to us people  Fountain Cop How about showing us some of your arrow heads?Huh? I would love to see them  Great

That's why I enjoy living in west Africa freedom real freedom you can do just about anything you want and nobody to bother you. Wanna go fishing no problem pic up your fishing rod and go to the beech  wanna eat fruit just limb up a tree and get them. It's totally uncivilized over there but what a pleasure not having all these rules and regulation to obied to.

Regards Xavier

We have the freedom to just go and hunt, but we do not have the finds that you guys are always pulling out the ground  Cry But like Xavier says pick up a rod and fish (fishing is pretty good here), climb the tree and help yourself to fruit, lots of great places to go for a nice day out.... But as for treasure we are limited here.....

Hi Peter, I think you live in a wonderful part of the world. While man-made treasures may be in short supply over there, you may wish to consider the immense richness of natural treasures in the rocks and soils. Smiley
