ace 250 currently --but used many many others

the ace 250 which I own one of and have used a fair bit, while it was not "designed" for salt water beach hunting and  is a preset ground balance machine -- however  with its preset zone limits it does  self adjust for soil conditions -- often by keeping the sen level lower -- say 2 -3 bars one can work the wet sand areas --in dry sand 4 or 5 bars often can be used -- the ace 250 is very sensitive and reacts badly to the minerals in salt water because of this --thus the need to lower the sensitivity ( aka power level) the more power you push the deeper and more sensitive your machine becomes ( note by pulling back on the sen level you will lose a bit of depth but the machine will then run stable enough to use in all but the worse cases )--however like all detectors it can only "push" as much electronic signal as the ground will accept -- thus the term "ground balanced" --ie your pushinng the maximum amount of signal the soil conditions will allow you to --- too much "signal" known as running "hot" can cause chatter and often causes poorer rather than better preformance.

yes there are better beach machines out there "special built" and designed for beach and salt water use -- and yes they cost dearly in most cases -- so you can hunt with the 250 a bit "shallower" for say about 250 bucks or you can pay out the big bucks and get a bit deeper  --its all in what you want.

Wow to say that the Ace 250 being used on the beaches in California are useless sounds like it came from some one with a bad unit. I just returned from the central coast with one of the best shoots i have ever had, and dug up and 1876 seated liberty quarter at the water line, in fact as i was digging a wave hit me at ankle deep, i evened used the ace with the coil in the water and sounded off over the target.

I found a locket that was engraved and looks like silver along with $8.91 in coins. You must put the hours in on this unit to really understand what it can do.

I don't know it this makes the different but after i did this everything changed, i ran the cable straight up the shaft to the first extension then coil around shaft to the top plug in. I also reset the unit by holding down the start button for two beeps. This is an excellent unit for novice to experienced treasure hunters.

Well I'm glad for you if it worked so.

Unfortunately, this is technically impossible. Many reasons. Single frequency, fixed Gb, entry level model....

In 25 years of detection, I never saw a single frequency detector being able to hunt decently in salt water.

Even "underwater" VLF motion metal detectors like the Surfmaster 2 and the Fisher 1280 do  have problems with salt water, that can only be solved by reducing the sensitivity.

What I well saw these last years is many entry level detectors owners wanting desperately their unit to be an high end one. I'll never understand why...

The 250 is a superb dry beaches and land coinshooter. I tested the ACE and two other entry level motion models this summer on the wet sand. See former posts.

Don't even dream about serious wet sand/waterr hunting, they are simply not capable in these environments.

I'm getting tired of this thread.

Think I'll leave the kids play together.

 No no!

The old "Arado's" were pretty good......

Wife and I have used our ACE250in NORCAL, from the tailing piles to the beach---Depth can be little iffy, but adjusting the sensitivity clears it right up!!
found lots of coins and stuff!!

Of course...after all, it's a metal detector.

But no way about an "automatic, self adjusting, ground balance".

Single frequency VLF motion detectors require lowering the sens AND disc out the salt to make some finds on wet salt sand. Both these actions are putting the odds of finding gold against the user.

Sigh !

Don't wanna go there any more. You were proven wrong, basta !

By the way, The AT PRO has a full adjustable GB, and was intended to hunt in meore severe conditions than the 250.

I was proven right, mate. Get your facts straight. There were several people here who tried it with success. You refused to try it. Your loss. You sold your Ace 250 because you hated it so much. That sort of makes your opinions rather jaded.

Look up the Garrett patents if you don't believe me. I agree that the newer Garrett ATI machines are more versatile but that's no reason to slam dunk the good old Garrett Ace 250.
