But it makes good TV and sells magazines.   Wink

Yea that it does now don't it. To many folks today think just because its a documentary show it has to be true or just because its in a history book on the non fiction shelve at the book store  it has to been true.

ohhh, the horrors.  Shocked  ...if you can't trust the book publishers, bookstores, and the librarians who can you trust?   Next your going to tell me most of the Knights Templar and ancient aliens stuff is hog-wash too.  Sad

Friend: It's on the Internet. It must be true.

Me: Where did you get that idea?

Few months back I attended an used book sellers convention, it was a small group but  interesting. One of the main topics was the lack of fact checking by the major publishers today, most of the authors and dealers were concerned that with all the desk top publishers and vanity press publishers out there publishing what ever they wish some of the major houses were following suit just to get books on the shelves. I am not sure how much nonsense is getting published but am sure there its a bunch.

Fact check?!?  Heck they don't even proof-read anymore.  Instead they use "spell-check" and it shows in all the inappropriate word choices.

LOL Think you right about that. Years ago it could take a year or more for a finish manuscript to go from editors to fact checkers  to proof readers then and only then was it published. Today a manuscript can be in book stores in less then 90 days with computers during the majority of the work and by limiting fact checking and proof reading. Its a sad thing.

I use it a lot and it catches those words that have letters close on the keyboard and are prone to typos. The thing that bothers me most is having to use a calculator because I suffer from a crisis of confidence when it comes to doing math in my head any more. I used to be a real whiz at it but now grab the old scientific calculator every time.

I also use spell check a lot and find myself getting upset at folks who don't at least run spell check before hitting the send or save button.....BUT we've all had experiences where spell check has let "to" be used for "two" or "too" (and those are reasonable examples, some of the substitutions completely change the entire sense of the sentence).   I've become tolerant of it in casual conversations (such as this board), but really----if I'm going to pay money for a book I expect it to be proof-read AFTER it has been spell-checked.

(and I'm with you on the calculator thing.  Same experience here.  In fact I used to race adding machines just for the fun of it.)
